Over the years, we've received countless questions about felt applique, embroidery foam, layered stitching, and other techniques used to add dimension to machine embroidery.
To help embroiderers better understand how these methods actually work, we're starting a new educational series.
In Part 1, we look at the most basic approach: placing 1 mm felt under a standard fill stitch.
What happens?
✔️ The embroidery becomes slightly raised
✔️ The design looks softer and fuller
✔️ Small details gain more visual depth
✔️ The effect remains subtle and professional
This technique won't create dramatic 3D embroidery, but it is an excellent way to add gentle dimension without changing the original design too much.
