Leaf spot or tikka disease Causal organism: Cercospora arachidicola, Cercosporadium personatum Tikka is a major disease-affecting groundnut (and all its varieties) in India. It occurs as well in almost all groundnut-growing countries of the world. Symptoms: 👉It occurs as two distinct types of leaf spot, namely, early leaf spot and late leaf spot. 👉These are caused by two different species of fungi: Cercospora personatum and Cercospora arachidicola. Early leaf spot 👉The spots caused by C. arachidicola are sub irregular to circular, 1–10 mm in diameter. 👉The lesions are dark brown and appear on the adaxial (upper) surface of the leaflets. 👉Light brown lesions are found on the abaxial (lower) surface. The lesions are larger than those caused by C. personatum and are surrounded by a bright yellow, circular halo. Late leaf spot 👉C. personatum causes small, dark spots which enlarge to about 3–8 mm diameter. Between few to several spots appear on each leaflet. These spots often coalesce to form irregular dark brown to black patches. 👉The spots mostly appear on the leaf blades, but at times, they also appear on the petioles and the stem. 👉The infected leaves drop off prematurely. The disease begins to appear a month after sowing and is severe during the flowering and harvesting stages.

🤔System of rice intensification🤔 👉The system of rice intensification (SRI) is a package of improved practices for growing rice crop. 👉It was first conceptualized in Madagascar by Father Henri Laulanie in 1983. 👉It is essentially a water-smart technology saving up to 20-50% water. 👉The major benefits of this technology are lower seed requirement (5kg ha-1), water-saving (20-50%), very high yields (35-40%), improved soil health, improved input use efficiency and lower methane emission (50-60%).

🍁Brown spot🍁🌾 (Cochliobolus miyabeanus) The disease is common in soils that are poorly drained or deficient in nutrients. Symptoms: 👉The symptoms are brown spots on the leaf and grain. Disease cycle: The disease is transmitted by the infected seeds. Control:🤔 The most effective way of controlling brown spot is to grow plants in good soil and provide adequate fertilizer. 👉Planting a resistant variety is the most practical way of controlling.

Rice Blast (Magnaporthe grisea) (Pyricularia oryzae) It is one of the most destructive diseases of rice. Symptoms: 👉The fungus produces spots or lesions on leaves, nodes, and panicles and grains. 👉The spots are elongated and pointed at each end. Damage of blast: 📍In severe infections, yields may be reduced by 50 %. 📍Upland rice is more severely damaged than lowland rice. Control: 👉Planting resistant varieties is the most economical way of controlling this disease. 👉Avoid excess nitrogen fertilizer. 👉There are several fungicides that effectively control blast but for economic reason, these are not used in the tropics.
