📍 Location: Chorbagan, North Kolkata
📅 Date: 17 October 2026
🧪 Forensic teams conduct 3D scanning
Following the deadly stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal, a forensic team conducted a 3D scan of the site to document its layout and entry/exit gates.
🔬 How can 3D scanning help?
🔹 Digitally preserve scene geometry.
🔹 Examine access routes and potential bottlenecks.
🔹 Support scene reconstruction alongside CCTV footage and witness statements.
🔹 Provide a digital record for further investigation.
⚖️ Forensic Insight: 3D scanning supports scene documentation and spatial analysis, but conclusions must be corroborated with other evidence.
📌 The investigation remains ongoing; findings should not be treated as conclusive.

| 7 | ⚖️ FORENSICS DIGEST | NEWS BRIEF
🧬 DNA MATCH ≠ PROOF OF MURDER
The Supreme Court of India, in The State of Himachal Pradesh v. Anchla @ Chanchla (2026 INSC 1074), upheld the accused’s acquittal, highlighting the importance of evaluating forensic evidence in its proper context.
🔬 Key Forensic Findings:
▪️ DNA from dried blood found on a trunk matched the accused.
▪️ The match did not establish when the blood was deposited or prove presence at the time of the murders.
▪️ Concerns regarding witness credibility and gaps in the investigation weakened the prosecution’s case.
⚖️ Forensic Takeaway: A DNA match is an important scientific finding, but it does not automatically establish guilt. Biological evidence must be interpreted alongside other evidence and the circumstances of the case.
📌 Key Principle: An investigating officer’s role is to collect evidence, not create it.

| 8 | 🧬 Can Airborne DNA Help Catch a Thief?
🔬 New research explores whether intruders leave DNA traces in indoor air, dust, and household surfaces.
🏠 Study Highlights:
• 391 eDNA samples from 22 households.
• Simulated 15-minute residential burglaries.
• Investigated airborne and surface DNA recovery.
⚖️ Forensic Significance: Airborne DNA could complement conventional DNA evidence when direct-contact traces are limited.
⚠️ Environmental factors and contamination remain major challenges. Further validation is needed before routine forensic use.

| 10 | 🔥 EXAMINATION OF CHARRED DOCUMENTS IN FORENSIC SCIENCE 🔬
Fire may destroy the paper, but not necessarily the evidence it holds.
In forensic science, the examination of charred documents plays a crucial role in recovering information from documents damaged by fire, extreme heat, or deliberate destruction. Even when paper is severely burnt, traces of writing, ink patterns, and document characteristics may still provide valuable investigative leads.
🔍 Key Aspects of Examination:
📄 1. Document Recovery: Careful handling, preservation, and recovery of fragile, partially burnt documents.
🔬 2. Visual & Microscopic Examination: Identification of surviving text, writing patterns, and physical characteristics.
💡 3. Advanced Analytical Techniques: Infrared (IR), ultraviolet (UV), spectroscopic methods, and digital image enhancement may help reveal information that is not readily visible.
🧪 4. Ink & Paper Analysis: Examination of ink, paper characteristics, and other physical or chemical features, where suitable.
⚖️ 5. Investigative Significance: Recovered information may assist in cases involving arson, fraud, forgery, insurance claims, document destruction, and other criminal investigations.
⚠️ An important forensic principle: Charred documents are extremely fragile. They must be handled carefully, documented thoroughly, and preserved using appropriate forensic protocols to avoid further damage or loss of evidence.
Forensic document examination demonstrates how scientific methods can recover meaningful information from even severely damaged evidence.
At Forensics Digest, we explore the science behind evidence, investigation, and justice. 🧬🔍

| 20 | 🦴 From Bones to Identity: The Role of Forensic Osteology
Bones can preserve valuable clues long after soft tissues have decomposed. In forensic science, the systematic examination of skeletal remains can assist in human identification by evaluating factors such as age, sex, stature, ancestry/population affinity, trauma, pathology, and individual characteristics.
🔬 Key areas of analysis include:
• Skeletal morphology
• Age and sex estimation
• Stature estimation
• Osteometric measurements
• Trauma and pathology assessment
• Radiological examination
• DNA analysis when applicable
• Comparative identification with known records
Every bone carries information—and forensic science helps transform that information into meaningful evidence.
