26 House passes bill banning Federal Reserve from issuing digital dollars
The House of Representatives passed a bill on Thursday that would prohibit the Federal Reserve from issuing a central bank digital currency (CBDC) unless specifically authorized to do so by Congress.
The CBDC Anti-Surveillance State Act passed the chamber by a vote of 216 to 192, almost entirely along party lines.
While the European Central Bank (ECB) is working hard on a CBDC, the Fed has not yet announced any plans to issue a digital dollar.
Still, Republicans, including former President Trump, have raised concerns that a CBDC could be abused by the government.
A CBDC is a digital version of a currency issued by a central bank. In the U.S., this would mean the Fed issuing a digital dollar that can be used just like a regular dollar.
House Minority Leader Tom Emmer (R-Minnesota), who introduced the bill, argues that a digital dollar “could allow the federal government to monitor Americans’ transactions and clamp down on politically undesirable activities.”
Emmer’s views on the issue largely align with those of Trump, who wants to block the creation of a CBDC if re-elected.
“As your president, I will never allow the creation of a digital currency by a central bank,” Trump, now considered the GOP nominee, said at a rally in New Hampshire in January.
“Such a currency would give a federal government, our federal government, absolute control over your money,” he added at the time. “They could take your money. You wouldn’t even know it was gone. That would be a dangerous threat to liberty.”
However, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), the ranking member on the House Financial Services Committee, argued on the House floor Thursday that a ban on CBDCs “directly threatens the dollar’s supremacy.”
“There is nothing about a CBDC that would compromise privacy — it’s a design feature that is under our control,” she added. “Instead, this bill is an attempt to stifle U.S. innovation and competitiveness abroad and undermine the most important federal agency for fighting inflation. | 54 | 1 | Loading... |
