According to the passage, what happens when light interacts with matter?
What is the synonym for "invisible" in the second sentence?
The Intriguing Power of Light
Light is a fundamental aspect of our universe, shaping our perception of the world and playing a vital role in numerous natural phenomena. It travels at an extraordinary speed, approximately 299,792 kilometers per second (186,282 miles per second), and behaves both as a wave and a particle.
Light is part of the electromagnetic spectrum, a vast range of invisible and visible radiation. Visible light is the portion we can perceive with our eyes, consisting of a spectrum of colors from violet to red. Different wavelengths correspond to different colors, with violet having the shortest wavelength and red the longest.
Light interacts with matter in various ways. It can be reflected, refracted (bent), or absorbed. Reflection is the bouncing back of light, such as seeing your reflection in a mirror. Refraction occurs when light bends as it passes through different mediums, like seeing a straw appear bent in a glass of water. Absorption happens when light energy is taken in by a material, which is why some objects appear colored.
The study of light has revolutionized various fields. Optics, the science of light and vision, has led to advancements in telescopes, microscopes, and eyeglasses. Our understanding of light also underpins crucial technologies like lasers, fiber optics, and solar panels.
