Star forts.
The invention and use of cannons and gunpowder in warfare are said to be the reason for these. Prior to their creation in the mid 15th century, medieval forts were usually defended by archers, who simply needed the higher ground to have an advantage over their enemies. But when cannons were let loose on the old style fortresses, the architecture has to adapt to the new weaponry.
There is a theory gaining traction which states that all of the star forts world wide have been rebuilt upon and that they were used in very ancient times as a type of energy grid.
Although i'd like to do more research on this before talking about it any further.
