| 11 | What is Copy Trading? A Simple & Powerful Way to Follow Expert Traders
Copy trading is a popular feature in modern trading platforms (especially in forex, crypto, stocks, and CFDs) that allows beginners, busy people, or anyone who doesn’t want to analyze markets themselves to automatically replicate the trades of experienced and successful traders , called Master Traders or Signal Providers.
Here’s the most important thing to understand about how copy trading actually works
Trades Only Happen in the Master Account , Everything Else is Just Proportional Duplication
When you use copy trading, no real trade is executed directly from your own account in the traditional sense.
Instead
1. The Master Trader (the expert you choose to follow) places trades in their own master account.
2. The platform instantly detects the trade (entry price, size, stop-loss, take-profit, etc.).
3. Your copy trading account automatically opens the same trade direction (buy or sell) , but the position size is scaled proportionally according to the balance difference between the master account and your account.
No independent decision-making or separate order execution happens in your account.
Your account simply mirrors (duplicates) the master trader’s actions in real time.
Real-World Example – How Position Sizing Works
Let’s say
- Master trader’s account balance = $1,000
- Your copy trading account balance = $10,000
- Another copier’s account balance = $5,000
Now the master trader opens 1 standard lot (for example, 1 lot of EUR/USD or 0.1 BTC, depending on the market).
What happens in each account?

Your position size = Master position size × (Your balance ÷ Master balance)
So in this case
- 1 lot × (10,000 / 1,000) = 10 lots in your account
- 1 lot × (5,000 / 1,000) = 5 lots in the other copier’s account
The beauty of this system is that only one real trade is placed , in the master account.
All the copy accounts just mirror the trade proportionally. This is much more efficient than if every single copier had to place their own independent order.
Key Advantages of This “One Master – Many Copies” Structure
- Efficiency , Only the master trader needs to be actively monitoring and executing trades.
- Speed , Copies usually open within milliseconds to a few seconds.
- Consistency , Everyone following the same master gets the exact same entry price and strategy execution (adjusted only for size).
- Lower operational load , Brokers and platforms handle far fewer real orders compared to if every copier traded manually.
- Scalability , A master trader with $1,000–$10,000 can be copied by hundreds or thousands of people with much larger accounts.
Things to Keep in Mind
- Risk is also scaled proportionally , If the master loses 10% of their account, your $10,000 account will also lose 10% ($1,000), not less.
- Slippage and spreads can sometimes differ slightly between accounts.
- Not all platforms allow 100% customization , some cap maximum leverage or lot sizes.
- Performance fees , Many master traders charge a percentage of your profits (e.g., 20–50%) as a success fee.
In Short
Copy trading is not you actively trading.
It is you automatically duplicating the real trades happening in someone else’s master account , with your position size intelligently scaled to match your account balance.

Why? Gold is at record highs (~₹1.78-1.79 lakh per 10g for 24K, 22K around ₹1.64 lakh) and silver has exploded (~₹4.1 lakh/kg). Both metals are in extreme euphoria mode after massive 2025-26 rallies.
Lump-sum at peaks = high risk of near-term pullback or correction (profit-taking, potential duty hikes on imports, overbought signals). Markets always cycle: what shoots up fast often cools off sharply.
Better approach
- Wait for a healthy dip/correction (don't chase highs).
- Or stagger buys (SIP-style in physical/digital gold) to average in.
- Diversify: Physical has storage/making charges hassles; consider gold ETFs/SGBs for easier exposure.
Lesson: Emotion + FOMO + big amount = dangerous combo. Patience pays in precious metals.
