🎉 May 2026 Student of the Month 🎉
Please join us in congratulating Anna Amarian, our May honoree at Pericles Law Center! 🥇
Anna joined our LL.M. program in Spring 2026 and has already made a remarkable impression. From the very beginning, she has attended all classes in person, demonstrating a level of commitment and engagement that inspires those around her. In her first semester, she earned the highest marks in both Legal Writing I and Introduction to American Law—an exceptional achievement that reflects both her natural ability and her disciplined approach to her studies.
We are proud to recognize Anna not only for her outstanding academic performance but also for the enthusiasm and seriousness she brings to every class. She embodies exactly the kind of dedicated, curious, and motivated learner that makes the Pericles community so special.
Congratulations, Anna! We are so proud to have you with us and can't wait to see all that you will continue to achieve. 🎉
I am very happy to be part of the Pericles LL.M. program. Pericles is the kind of place where everyone and everything encourages you to learn – a friendly environment, supportive professors, motivated classmates, an easy-to-use Moodle platform, and great study materials and books. Studying here is both demanding and fun, and I genuinely enjoy it. So far, I have completed two courses: Legal Writing I and Introduction to American Law. Legal Writing I not only taught me how to draft legal documents in English — memoranda, client letters, and the like – but also helped me think more clearly about the structure of my writing in Russian and other languages. As for Introduction to American Law, I found it particularly valuable. The course gave me a clear understanding of how the U.S. legal system is organized – from the role of case law and precedent to the relationship between federal and state courts. We also examined several landmark cases, which really helped me see how legal principles are applied in practice. What stood out to me most was learning how constitutional protections, such as due process and equal protection, function in real-world litigation. Each week built on the previous one, and I finished the course with a much stronger grasp of American legal reasoning. I am really looking forward to the other courses at Pericles, especially those taught by Marian Dent and Brian Bellerose. Studying at Pericles is a unique experience I would definitely recommend — whether you want to improve your Legal English, deepen your knowledge of foreign legal systems, or get to know new people who are as passionate about law as you are.

🎉 April Student of the month 🎉
Please join us in celebrating Dmitry Korneev, our April honoree at Pericles Law Center! 🥇
This is what professor Donald Cannon said about him:
" Few students can you actually accuse of making unmistakable, tangible progress in English over 12 short weeks. Dmitry is one.
He started out in Approaching Legal English, … well, perhaps a bit more than just approaching, but with insatiable curiosity and intense verve. As we progressed through the classes, you could almost see him thirsting for more and more. He posed questions that brought on insightful discussions and, frankly, often left me able to answer only, “I’ll have to get back to you on that later.”
In ALE, you get so much homework that you don’t have to turn it in by a specific date. “Just do it whenever you can,” I like to say, “but try to get it all done.” Dmitry himself runs on a backbreaking schedule—litigation, travel, family—and still he has managed to keep up a flow of assignments filling up my inbox.
Speaking—everyone’s bogeyman in language acquisition—has turned into Dmitry’s particular success. Unflinchingly, he has attacked his bouncing Russian intonation and replaced it with a downward English one, while thereby also facilitating clear, short, and concise sentences. He joins our Saturday conversation group regularly, sharing his experiences, reviewing court cases, and comparing Russian and American law.
We finished ALE a week ago, and he just sent me another one of his speaking tasks today. Nothing can stop him."
Congratulations, Dmitry 👏
Dear Pericles team, I am deeply honored to be named Student of the Month. It was an unexpected and pleasant surprise, especially since I completed my first course at Pericles (Approaching Legal English) this April. I would like to extend my special thanks to Professor Donald Cannon. His approach and exceptional teaching made this course not only highly useful and informative, but also genuinely engaging. Approaching Legal English was my first step, and I am already looking forward to continuing my studies at Pericles. Thank you to the entire Pericles team for the recognition and everything you do.
Someone recently told me, “I need a legal English course that inspires me. Something that’s valuable, useful, interesting, and even fun.”
Let’s look at these things carefully, like lawyers, or like someone who wants to express ideas precisely in English—just as we do in the course I teach, Approaching Legal English.
First, “valuable.” We usually think of “value” as “ценность,” but that’s off. “Value” is really a ratio: quality received for money paid. The value of a course isn’t what you paid for it, but what you can do with what you got out of it—how much your teacher opened your eyes to new things you can do with English in a better way. You’d be surprised at how many lawyers misuse “valuable.”
Next, “useful.” Probably one of the most mistranslated words. “Useful” isn’t “полезный”: the advice my accountant gave me wasn’t “useful.” It helped me a lot, so it was “helpful.” And that’s what you need when you study legal English.
Now my favorite, “interesting,” the most uninteresting word in the English language—something you say and write only when you can’t come up with anything better. In Approaching Legal English, we’ll concentrate on sharpening your ideas, whether you’re speaking to a client or writing a CV for a new job.
And lastly “fun.” I always think of it like this: I can’t define it, but I sure know it when I see it. Why not come to our first class and experience how much you can enjoy making English work for you?

🎉 March 2026 Student of the Month 🎉
Please join us in congratulating Maria Cherner, our March honoree at Pericles Law Center! 🥇
Maria’s journey with Pericles began in 2020, at the height of the pandemic, when she enrolled in Approaching Legal English.
From that moment she was drawn to the passion and engagement that define our community.
She returned in Fall 2024 for Language of Contracts, earning a certificate with honor, and then took the next step by joining the LL.M. program in Spring 2025.
Since then, she has distinguished herself with remarkable consistency: she was the second‑top student in Advanced Legal Reasoning and repeated that achievement as second‑top in Legal Writing I.
We are proud to recognize Maria for her diligence, her dedication to expanding her legal knowledge, and the genuine enthusiasm she brings to every course.
Her long‑standing commitment to learning and her ability to excel at every stage make her a true standout in the Pericles community.
Congratulations, Maria!
We are so proud to have you as part of our community and look forward to all that lies ahead in your journey with us.👏
Her words:
"I am both honored and surprised to be named Student of the Month. Pericles is home to so many talented young professionals, which makes this recognition even more special. My journey here began back in 2020, at the height of the pandemic, with the 'Approach Legal English' course. From day one, I was captivated by the atmosphere. The professors are truly passionate about what they do—there are no boring lectures here, only a deep involvement in an exciting learning process. It’s clear that both faculty and students find genuine joy in collaborating. I am currently enrolled in the LL.M. program, and I’m certain that even after graduation, my story with Pericles will continue. There are always so many relevant and fascinating courses that keep pace with the ever-changing legal world."

What’s your take? Should federal funding be tied to how universities enforce anti-discrimination policies?
Poll questions:
💬 What’s your take? Should federal funding be tied to how universities enforce anti-discrimination policies?
1️⃣ No, Universities are places for free speech, Harvard should not be pressured into preventing students from protesting their outrage.
2️⃣Yes, Jewish and Israeli students at Harvard are entitled to a safe environment, and if Harvard won’t provide it the government should step in to pressure it to do so.
3️⃣I’m not sure--it’s complicated.
🚨 BREAKING: The U.S. has filed a federal lawsuit against Harvard over alleged antisemitism on campus.
🗓 Filed: March 20 | ⚖️ Legal basis: Title VI of the Civil Rights Act
🔍 The complaint alleges Harvard showed “deliberate indifference” to severe harassment targeting Jewish & Israeli students, including:
• Verbal abuse & “Heil Hitler” chants
• death threats, megaphone disruptions
• Students spat on & classes repeatedly interrupted
…while the administration allegedly failed to act.
⚖️ The suit also claims Harvard has historically taken swift, firm action when other minority groups face discrimination—raising questions about unequal enforcement.
💡 Why can the federal government sue?
Title VI of the Civil Rights Act prohibits discrimination by any institution receiving federal funds. Harvard receives over $2.6 billion in federal grants.
📜 What’s being demanded?
✅ Declarations that Harvard violated the law
✅ Immediate safety protocols for Jewish students
✅ Disciplinary action against anti-Israeli protestors
✅ Repayment of federal grants & suspension of future funding
✅ Independent monitor to oversee compliance

Panic or what?
On March 12 the US OFAC temporarily reversed sanctions for one month on transport of any Russian oil that was dispatched prior to March 12. It seems like an odd rule—we forgive anyone who was shipping Russian oil in violation of sanctions if you please deliver this month!
Oh, but companies who didn’t violate US sanctions by shipping last month but think maybe they can use the month hiatus to ship Russian oil now--really alleviate the potential crisis without having to violate US law—sorry, no, you can’t do that.
Also on March 5 they allowed one month for shipment of Russian oil sent prior to March 5 to be delivered to India—another “we forgive you this time, please deliver, but you can’t do it again” ruling. It shows the US government scared of an oil crisis and recognizing that Russian oil can fix the problem—but still not willing to really reverse its stance on Russian oil sanctions.

Big news from the U.S. Department of Justice ⚖️
The DOJ issued a press release (March 10) that might be a game-changer for corporate compliance.
In a nutshell: If companies voluntarily disclose misconduct, cooperate fully, and remediate the issue, the Department may decline to prosecute the company altogether.
For businesses worried about accidental sanctions or export control violations, this could be a major incentive to come clean.
However, before you hit that "disclose" button:
🚨 This does not protect individuals. The DOJ can still go after the people behind the violations.
🚨 Your company must fully cooperate with any enforcement actions that result from your disclosure.
Still, moving from a piecemeal approach to a single, transparent policy across the entire DOJ seems like a positive step for corporate accountability.
“The Department-wide Corporate Enforcement Policy (CEP) provides concrete benefits to incentivize companies to voluntarily disclose discovered misconduct, cooperate with our investigations, and timely and appropriately remediate the wrongdoing. For companies that do, absent certain limited aggravating circumstances, the Department will decline to prosecute the company.”Read the full release here: https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/department-justice-releases-first-ever-corporate-enforcement-policy-all-criminal-cases
💐 Dear women, we congratulate you on International Women's Day! 💐

May your tenderness and love be abundant throughout the world.

🎉 February 2026 Student of the Month 🎉
This month, we are breaking tradition to honor someone who is not a "student" per se but who perfectly embodies the spirit of lifelong learning and fierce dedication to education: Svetlana Zaitseva from Nizhny Novgorod. 🥇
While Svetlana is not a regular student but a legal English teacher at Nizhny Novgorod State University, we are naming her our "Student" of the Month for her extraordinary commitment as a teacher and coach, encouraging her students' participation in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition.
Her leadership was on full display this month when she brought her brand new and inexperienced team—full of beginning law school students—to Moscow to participate in and learn from the competition. On the night of Friday, February 6, after three busy days of competition, she brought them all to visit Pericles and learn about our courses and graduate programs.
What sets Svetlana apart, however, is not just her dedication to her students and the competition, but her willingness to step back into the shoes of a learner.
In 2022, despite already being a legal English teacher herself, she chose to attend Pericles Legal English Course as a student, where the class discussed legal concepts such as adverse possession and restrictive covenants on land and studied documents from actual cases such as Johnny Depp's successful defamation case against Amber Heard.
Then, in 2023, she chose to attend Pericles' Jessup Summer School—not as an observer in the way that most coaches do, but as a full participant. By writing a memorial, working in teams with actual students from Nizhny Novgorod and other universities, and making oral arguments alongside her students, she chose to experience the rigors of the competition firsthand to better understand her students' challenges when they compete each year.
This rare blend of humility, passion for her work, and pedagogical creativity makes her an inspiration to both her fellow teachers and her students.
Svetlana, thank you for showing us that the best teachers never stop being students. We are honored to recognize you.⭐️
"Dear colleagues, I have been a student at Pericles twice. Both times it was an unforgettable experience, but I was chosen as the Student of the Month not for being an outstanding student. I am a teacher. Helping young people to develop personally and professionally makes my life worthwhile. Jessup is one of the best ways to achieve this goal. Jessup is my true love even though I am a teacher of English, not law. I am deeply grateful to Pericles for everything they have done and continue doing to promote Jessup in Russia."
