| 7 | If you don't have a speaking partner...
A lot of people in our IELTS community are preparing for the test on their own. And one of the most common worries I hear is:
“I don’t have a speaking partner. How am I supposed to practise?”
If that’s you, I have some good news: you probably need a speaking partner much less than you think. Think about what actually happens in the IELTS speaking test. The examiner asks you a question, and you answer. It’s not really a conversation where two people are exchanging ideas. Most of the time, you’re the one doing the talking.
And that’s pretty much what happens when you practise with a speaking partner too. They ask you a question, and then they listen to your answer. And unless your speaking partner is a good teacher or someone who can give you high-quality feedback, they probably won’t notice many of the grammar, vocabulary or pronunciation problems that a teacher would notice.
You can read the question yourself and answer it aloud. You can practise in front of a mirror. You can talk to a teddy bear. You can even talk to your cat. As long as you’re answering the question aloud, you’re practising. Because if the person sitting opposite you is simply listening and can’t give you useful feedback, for the purposes of your speaking practice, they’re not doing much more than the cat. 😄 So please don’t worry if you don’t have a speaking partner. You don’t need to put your preparation on hold until you find one.
Of course, practising with another person can feel nicer, and having a partner may help you stay consistent because you’ve agreed to practise together. But that’s more about motivation and accountability than the speaking practice itself.
And if you want feedback, you can also use ChatGPT Voice. For example, take a screenshot of five questions from one topic and send it to ChatGPT with an instruction like this:
“Ask me these five questions one by one. Let me finish each answer without interrupting me. After we finish all five questions, give me feedback. List the grammar mistakes I made, comment on my fluency and vocabulary, tell me whether I used relevant topic-specific vocabulary.”
So please don’t feel that your preparation has to stop until you find a speaking partner. You have the questions, you have your voice recorder, and you have tools that can give you feedback. That’s already enough to practise.
And one more thing: when you don’t feel like practising, remind yourself why you need IELTS in the first place. What do you want it to give you? A university place? A new job? A move to another country? Keep that bigger goal in mind, and then go and do your 15–20 minutes of practice. | 308 |

| 10 | Boring or bored? This is a really common mistake. So let’s make sure you know the difference.
And there’s a good reason you need to know it: boredom is a pretty common topic in IELTS Speaking, and “a boring place” is actually one of the current topics for May–December.

| 11 |  One of the current IELTS Speaking Part 1 topics for the May–December 2026 period is ‘Headphones’ 🎧
If you get this topic in your test, you may need to talk about the type of headphones you use, what you use them for, or which ones you prefer. And this is where knowing the right vocabulary makes your answer much easier.
Instead of saying “the small ones” or “the big headphones” 😅, learn the words you’d actually use in everyday English: wireless earbuds, over-ear headphones, on-ear headphones, clip-on earbuds, bone-conduction headphones, and more.
The more topic-specific vocabulary you know, the easier it is to give detailed, natural-sounding answers and show the examiner a wider range of vocabulary.
💡 Save this post and choose 2–3 words you could actually use to talk about your own headphones. That’s much more useful than trying to memorise the whole list.

| 13 | Now let me show you what makes this a Band 7+ IELTS speaking answer👇
It’s only about 20 seconds long, but it’s packed with small details that tell the examiner, “This student has a strong command of English.”
For such a short answer, it demonstrates a surprisingly wide range of natural English.
For example:
✅ Instead of saying “mirrors get dirty,” the speaker says “they show every speck of dust” (every tiny bit of dust) and “they get smudged easily” (they quickly get covered in fingerprints or marks).
✅ You’ll hear natural grammar like seem to + infinitive, would rather not + bare infinitive, and end up + -ing.
✅ You’ll also notice a natural phrasal verb (end up) that native speakers use all the time.
✅ And finally, pay attention to the delivery. The answer sounds relaxed, natural and effortless rather than memorised.
How to practise it
Listen to the answer a few times.
Make sure you understand every word and every grammar structure.
Practise saying it until you sound like me or better.

| 17 |  One of the current cue cards for May - December 2026 is Describe a boring place. If this topic comes up in your test, you'll naturally move on to Part 3 questions about boredom. "Boring" is also quite a common topic in Part 1, so it's worth making sure you don't confuse boring and bored.
✅ boring = describes a person, place or thing
The party was boring.
The lecture was boring.
It was a really boring place to visit.
✅ bored = describes how you feel
I was bored.
I got bored after about twenty minutes.
I'm feeling bored.
A simple way to remember it is:
‼️It is boring, but I am bored.
