2010: then-Bishop Mar Awa Royel (now Patriarch Mar Awa III) made his first trip to China, at the invite of the Jingjiao Fellowship, to reconnect with descendants of the Church of the East’s ancient mission there. That mission started in 635 AD, when Church of the East missionaries reached the Tang Dynasty capital. The Xi’an Stele, erected in 781 AD, still records it today. He went back in 2012 to see the stele in person. Last year he became the first Patriarch to visit Hong Kong, timed to the 400th anniversary of the stele’s rediscovery.

Unexpectedly, I came across a statue of the Slavic god Chur (who was responsible for land surveying and guarding boundaries) on a country road, which bore a striking resemblance to a bas-relief from the palace of Sargon II in Khorsabad (ancient Dur-Sharrukin). After looking at other images of Chur, it seems the lion at his side is indeed the personal vision of the sculptor. It is pleasant to see that Mesopotamian motifs are firmly woven into the patchwork quilt of the cultural subconscious.

Неожиданно встетила на сельской дороге статую славянского бога Чура (отвечал за межевание земель и охрану границ), очень уж напоминающего барельеф из дворца Саргона II в Хорсабаде (древнем Дур-Шаррукине). Посмотрела другие изображения Чура, и ручной лев у него, похоже, всё-таки личное видение скульптора. Приятно, что месопотамские мотивы плотно вшиваются в лоскутное одеяло культурного подсознания.
