Metal vs. Fiber Posts When residual coronal structure is insufficient to retain a core buildup, the choice of post system becomes a critical factor in the long-term prognosis of the tooth. 1. Metal Post • Materials: Stainless steel, titanium, or custom-cast alloys. • Key Strength: High tensile strength and maximum rigidity. Indicated for cases with minimal remaining tooth structure where structural support is the primary concern. • Clinical Limitations: • Stress Concentration: The high elastic modulus (relative to dentin) can create stress points at the root apex, potentially leading to irreversible root fractures. • Esthetics: Risk of "gray-out" or shadowing through translucent ceramic crowns in the esthetic zone. 2. Fiber-Reinforced (Fiberglass) Posts • Materials: Glass fibers embedded in a resin matrix. • Key Strength: Biomechanical Compatibility. The elastic modulus is similar to dentin, allowing the post-core-tooth unit to flex together. This promotes a "monoblock" effect that favors repairable failures over catastrophic fractures. • Clinical Limitations: • Technique Sensitivity: Highly dependent on the quality of the adhesive bond within the root canal. • Flexural Limits: May offer less resistance to heavy functional loads in patients with parafunctional habits (e.g., bruxism). #AboutDent
