➤ Sheikh Ahmad Hassoun stands in a Damascus courtroom. This time he's not behind a podium or state television. But in the dock, facing war crimes charges, before the Fourth Criminal Court.
➤ Syrians called him the "Mufti of Barrels." He earned it. As Grand Mufti from 2005 to 2021, he used Friday sermons to bless the killing of his own countrymen, declaring any opposition area would be "completely destroyed." His own hometown of Aleppo burned under regime barrels, but he didn't care.
➤ In 2017, he signed off on executions inside Sednaya, a prison that became known as the human slaughterhouse.
➤ In his defence, Hassoun argues that his role as cleric was an act of mediation, and that it was meant to minimise harm in an attempt to protect Syrians.
He tried to run in March last year, but got caught at Damascus airport.

| 10 |  Syria Puts Former Grand Mufti On Trial For Inciting Killings During Assad-Era Uprising
The Fourth Criminal Court in Damascus on Thursday opened the first trial session of Ahmad Hassoun, the former Grand Mufti who served under the deposed Assad regime, on charges including complicity in war crimes, crimes against humanity and incitement to murder.
Ahmad Hassoun issued fatwas that authorised the killing of Syrians during the uprising against Bashar al-Assad's regime.
He became known as the "Mufti of Barrels" — a reference to the barrel bombs the Assad regime dropped on civilian areas.
According to a report by Amnesty International, Ahmed Hassoun was deputised by Bashar al-Assad to approve the execution of up to 13,000 inmates in the notorious Sednaya prison in Damascus.

| 12 |  A UN commission of inquiry says Israel has deliberately targeted Palestinian children, resulting in genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes in the Gaza Strip, as well as war crimes in the occupied West Bank.
The new report says that Israeli authorities and security forces have "deliberately carried out acts inflicting death and severe bodily and mental harm on hundreds of thousands of Palestinian children", and that the killings continued even after last October's ceasefire in Gaza.
The commission says it has reasonable grounds to conclude that those acts "form part of a deliberate strategy to destroy the future of the Palestinians in Gaza by targeting their children".
