The French National Assembly and Senate have just passed a law today requiring access to social media platforms to be linked to your verified identity through FranceConnect. FranceConnect has existed for years and centralizes each citizen’s digital identity, including taxes, fines, driving licences, national ID cards, vaccines and other public services. From September 1, 2026, people will no longer be able to create new accounts on social medias without providing their identity. For existing accounts, the requirement will take effect on January 1, 2027. And people under the age of 16 will be banned from accessing these platforms.
