Ethics is one subject where efforts are proportional to marks. Still many people struggle with ethics as : 1. The exam is positioned on day 3 - when you have already written 4 papers. Exhaustion sets in by then, body is on breaking point - and the cumulative effect of sleep deficiency over the days is at peak. Its common to see people using volini in Mains hall to get over pain in hand 2. Despite the pecuilar positioning, its one of the most rigorous papers. It demands crystal clear understanding of concepts and contains both applied and theory sections. And to add to that, it is one of the lengthiest papers after optionals. Many people get low marks just because they are unable to complete the paper on time. 3. UPSC has also been varying few things. In case studies, they have tried to bamboozle candidates by reversing the order of questions. In 2022, in case studies, they asked for course of action first and then options. People who have a set way of writing - first intro, then stakeholders, then dilemmas, then options and finally course of action - felt betrayed the questions. Consequently, 2022 was a bloodbath in ethics. Still, there is a way to score in ethics. Having personally scored 117 and 121 with no coaching and only internet - i feel it can be done. In first attempt, i started prep from January and had left ethics to be completed in the time between Prelims and Mains - and it was enough i feel. I found Varun Jain's lectures somewhere and just watched them 2-3x. SAME RESOURCE - MULTIPLE TIMES. Second time, i watched Mudit Jain sir's lectures for case studies and ethics answer writing. Now to the brass tacks. • Most people face issue with writing more theory in section A and not linking case studies to theory. Ethics is one paper where EXAMPLES are mandatory. Examples and keywords substantiate your answer. For example, in a question on doctrine of double effect - if you give example of Covid lockdown OR demonetisation - you have hit bull's eye. It gives clear signal to examiner that you understand the crux of the question. And when you make examiner's job easier, your path to securing good marks becomes a lot easier. On contrary, trying to flex intellectual superiority by usign complex works and arguments will almost always result in less marks. • Other things people struggle with is point generation. In ethics, Syllabus is your ultimate framework. To make an answer multidimensional from ethics point of view - try to see if you can incorporate one point from each part of syllabus. For example, in a quote based question - write one point each from attitude, aptitude, emotional intelligence, public service etc. It will naturally elevate your answers. • Another thing is not writing answers from ethics point of view. In ethics, you should avoid writing general GS stuff. Instead, do a ethics wise breadth approach. You can always generate more points by using sylalbus as f/w, also by doing passes in your answer writing - like using thinker pass( Sutherland, Pestalozzi) , religion pass, quote pass ( adding quotes like "Justice is fairness") to add dimensions to your answers. • To do this, once you get the paper, in the first five minutes - try to go over any 2 case studies. Mark the stakeholders, find ethical dilemmas and write the keywords on the paper. Ideally, first thing you should do when you receive each paper - write what you msut do each question - at top - write - use FD/SDG, use commitees, use keywords(talking about general GS here) . Now go over the questions and whatever keywords, Current affairs, quotes comes to your mind - write it beside the question. This is the flash recall. Once you are in the flow, such fine points will be difficult to recall. Also, as the time crunch comes, the flight and fight response will degrade your recall. Thus having such content already offloaded onto paper will help you in cruch time.

Glad that someone spoke against it. We, too, have suffered on that subreddit, and it's safe to say that most of the posts there are made by the sales teams of institutes. They use private accounts to promote their specific content and smear others. It is all shady marketing in the garb of questions like, "Is XYZ course good?" or "What are the reviews of the PQR platform?" Their only goal is to lure newcomer aspirants into their courses. Bots line up the comment section with an almost 80:20 spread—80% positive and 20% negative—so that people feel the commenters are genuine. In reality, the truly critical comments are silently removed by r/UPSC's sold-out moderators. When we posted there, our posts were deleted almost every single time. So-called subredditors wrote trashy comments on our posts, and when we raised concerns, our posts were removed, and our account was banned from the subreddit. We even created our own subreddit, but that too was flagged and forced to close due to mass reporting. That day, we resolved to fix the skewed power balance in the Reddit space as far as the UPSC CSE is concerned. In continuation of this, we filed RTIs with multiple bodies questioning how someone can use the name "r/UPSC"—considering UPSC itself is a constitutional body—to run a private platform. And it is jag zahir (an open secret), as Mudit sir said, that the subreddit is sold out. It is just like that UPSC Twitter username someone had appropriated and used for many years. Along the same lines, anyone could go on Reddit, create subreddits for each and every constitutional body, and run their shady businesses. Mains '26 peeps: Some of you must be feeling anxious, overwhelmed, and some even on the brink of losing hope. You might be trying a lot of things—like aggregating content from topper copies, consolidating your notes, writing FLT after FLT — and still feeling completely overwhelmed by the end of the day. CSE is not a domain specific exam like Neet , CLAT etc where you are competing with top people from your domain. What makes it a true clash of titans is that the cream of each domain - law, engineering, medicine, humanities are fighting for a spot in India's bureaucracy. That is what makes it top tier cross domain hypercompetition. The competition is elite and so should your efforts - if you want to sail through. Also, remember that Mains is designed to be hard. You are not alone in feeling overwhelmed by the MAIN challenge. The amount of hard work you are putting in these days is more than many people will do in six lifetimes. Keep in mind that there is a critical point—a boiling point—that must be reached before you ascend to the next level. Whether that is in answer writing, note consolidation, or writing full-length tests end-to-end in time bound manner, that breakthrough won't come in a day.
