Our independent casualty monitoring effort has released the casualty figures for May 2026. Our research has revealed that one out of every three security force fatalities goes unacknowledged by official channels.
After analysing a dataset of 77 separate incidents, we identified 165 security personnel killed in action (KIA). Of these, official sources have acknowledged only 110 deaths (66.7%), while 55 (33.3%) remain hidden or unreported.
During May, the army bears the heaviest burden accounting for 65 fatalities, or 39% of the total. The Frontier Corps (FC) and Police/CTD follow closely, each suffering 42 deaths (26% apiece). Pro-state militias, intelligence informants, and coast guards make up the remaining 9%.
The Deadliest Locations
Quetta recorded the highest number of casualties (46 incidents), the district of Bannu emerged as the deadliest hometown for fallen personnel. Peshawar, Lakki Marwat, and D.I. Khan also feature prominently among the top hometowns of the deceased aswell as scattered locations throughout Punjab
In terms of where attacks occurred, after Quetta (46), Bannu saw 22 casualties, followed by the tribal districts of Bajaur (16), North Waziristan (9), and D.I. Khan (8).
How They Are Dying
The modus operandi of militants has shifted decisively toward high-impact assaults. Suicide attacks are the single greatest threat, responsible for 61 incidents, followed by armed clashes (36) and targeted killings (32). IED explosions (19) and ambushes (14) remain persistent dangers, while checkpoint attacks, drone strikes, and sniper fire account for smaller numbers.
The rank breakdown of identified fatalities may underscores the reality that the war is largely being fought and lost by junior enlisted personnel or that casualties from higher ranks or specialized groups are hidden better from the public. Sepoys constitute 27% of identified KIA, while constables account for 8% and Naiks 5%. A full 25% of profiles had an unknown rank, indicating gaps in available records. Officers and senior NCOs fall into the remaining 33%
DISCLAIMER: The 165 KIA count is not the upper range of the real count. This is the MINIMUM that our team has managed to verify by themselves using different avenues. The real count is most likely higher than what we have recorded due to sanitisation efforts by the state to keep casualties hidden. We try to avoid speculation and disregard casualty claims that don't meet our confirmation standards. If you feel that our count is incorrect or misleading then feel free to get in touch with us on X at https://x.com/PakCasualties
Be prepared to bring proof as we will not entertain claims that have no backing.
