One of the most radicalizing events of my childhood was seeing, with my own eyes, the difference between Saint Jean Baptiste Day in Montreal and Canada Day in Ottawa. As a teenager in the early 2010s, I took a Greyhound with some friends to Parliament Hill for Canada Day. What I saw in 2014 were kiosks dedicated to Chinese, Indian, and Filipino cultures: dragon dancing, traditional Punjabi dance, and nothing remotely or distinctly Anglo Canadian. There were no references to English, Irish, or Scottish folk traditions in our nation’s capital. Even Canada Day in Montreal, similar as it was to Ottawa’s, was not nearly as bad. But the contrast with Saint Jean Baptiste Day was stark. You would not see a single foreign face in the massive crowd beneath the white and blue fireworks or the fleurdelisé flags. There was an optimistic feeling of unity. Most Saint Jean Baptiste Day celebrations are still like this, even today in 2026: Canadians who still remember who they are. We must make every Dominion Day, not “Canada Day”, inspire that same deep sense of national pride and love for our people.

When we win, we’ll have nation wide St. Jean Baptiste celebrations in honour of our French Canadian heritage. The same way we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

The main thing I learned from the civic nationalist vs ethnic nationalist space last night is that civic nationalists do not seem willing to debate. They simply do not show up. When they do engage, they are very weak at defending the current state of affairs or explaining a realistic political path to a wealthy, high trust, multiethnic society.

The difference is self-segregation in Canada, which looks far more like immigrant behaviour in Europe. That’s the result of 53 years of the cultural mosaic, since the 1971 Multiculturalism Policy which discouraged formal assimilation. Canada is not an assimilating country. Historically, it struggled to assimilate even continental, eastern, and southern European immigrants. The Loyalists and built the culture, institutions, and foundation that allowed English, Irish, and Scottish settlers, regardless of religious denomination, to assimilate into an Anglo-Canadian ethnic core. Irish Catholics were not only one of Canada’s founding ethnic groups, represented on the old flag and in many national symbols, but they also overcame their bitter Old World conflicts with northern Protestants. Canada also managed to build a workable settlement with the French Catholic population that was already here. All three of these outcomes would have been almost unthinkable in Europe, but that was the extent of Canada’s assimilative capacity. The small numbers of Dutch and Germans in eastern Canada were absorbed into that Anglo-Canadian ethnos, minus the Amish. Assimilation was essentially limited to the British and French cores, and a bit of Northwestern Europe. Some Germans and Ukrainians settled in Alberta and Saskatchewan, where many became largely assimilated Anglo-Canadians, often retaining only a quarter or less of their ancestral background. Even so, they remained a minority within the broader population. Chinese, Filipino, Indian, and other diaspora communities have been allowed to exist as micro-nations in places like Surrey, Richmond, Brampton, and Markham. In many of these places, a person can live almost an entire life without meaningfully interacting with Canadians. They can go to school, work, live, date, socialize, and die within their own isolated ethnic community. But, and this has gotten me in hot water with racial populists, is that this is also true for most modern continental, eastern, and southern European immigrants in Canada. These are not the ones who settled the prairies between the 1890s to 1945. The vast majority of these arrived, and more importantly remained in Canada, no earlier than the postwar period, with most coming under Pearson and Trudeau in the 1960s and 1970s They arrived under a different immigration regime and a different ideology. Rather than being absorbed into a common national culture, immigrants were encouraged to preserve and reproduce their distinct identities indefinitely. This is how you end up with wops, krauts, cloggies, bohunks, wogs, dagos, hohols, moskals, guineas, greasers, polacks, Magyars, and every other diaspora identifying more with their parents’ nationalities than with Canada, even though Canadians outnumber both foreign whites and non-whites. There also exists a deeply Americanized view of the country in them, whether liberal or far right. Canada is either a generic “White European” colony with no core national identity like the U.S., or it’s a post-national economic zone. The meme about “white ethnics are at it again”, arose because of how many of them seem to be at odds with the history, heritage, symbols and mythos of Canada. There exists an antipathy for Canada and a denial that we are a distinct nation. Your Mark Marissens, Kat Kanadas, and your Mark Slapinskis. Multiculturalism replaced assimilation as the organising principle of Canadian society, and the outcome has been the growth of self-contained ethnic enclaves rather than the creation of a unified national culture. This is the silver lining to our nightmare. Canadian identity and demographics have been preserved for half a century, are pure, and homogenous relative to the United States. We still have a distinct ethnocultural identity.
