Most Canadians still descend from British and French settlers, which means our national identity developed from a much narrower historical foundation. Of course, there will be white nationalists, Hitlerists, and other ideological types in any organization. There is overlap between them and ethnic nationalists or particularists, since they share some goals. They both want to ensure that they and their families have safety, posterity, and continuity. There are doubtless people like that in Patriot Front, just as there are in Second Sons. But the key distinction is identification, sincerity, and authenticity. Are they rooted, do they sincerely believe in their folk, their nation. Are they captivated by its heroes, stories, and symbols? Do they see themselves in their ancestors and the past? It’s ultimately a question of faith. For both types of people, success is achieved through localized and nationalized forms. It comes through belief in distinct nations with real histories, cultures, religions, and values, and recognizing their inherent worth.

You may or may not know that Thomas Rousseau seized control of Vanguard America’s organization and broke away to form Patriot Front. He did this because Vanguard America was essentially a group of Hitlerists wearing Americana as a skin suit. They used American symbols to advance their own ideology, but they did not actually believe in the historic nation that is the United States of America, nor did they truly identify with it. Rousseau is a real nationalist. He deeply identifies with the historic United States as his nation. He views it as a real place inhabited by a real people, the American people. He sees the ground beneath his feet as more than mere territory. He is enchanted by the living history around him. In this sense, Thomas Rousseau and I are the same, though for me the nation is Canada. You can see that impulse in the explosive rise of Patriot Front, whose popularity reached new heights this week. Americans don’t want old school white nationalism, which flattens all historic distinctions and often serves as a front for views deeply intertwined with prewar National Socialism, postwar neo Nazism, Nordicism, Hitlerism, and Germanophilia. That tendency often presents itself as just solidarity between White nations, but in practice it becomes something else. American nationalists are clearly yearning for something distinctly ethnic, particular, and unique to themselves. How they pull that off, given that the U.S. does not have a shared ethnic origins, I don’t know, but I support it.
