Space RSS Feed Scientists discover mysterious new X-ray objects 'unlike any they have seen before'
NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory has found a brand new type of an otherwise familiar object – compact binary systems that steal gas from other stars, but which do so while emitting very low-energy X-rays but copious amounts of ultraviolet.
Chandra spotted 84 suspicious object emitting very low-energy X-rays in six galaxies – four evolved ellipticals and two spirals, namely our near-neighbor the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) and the Pinwheel Galaxy (M101).
"We've never encountered a group of objects that act like this," said Mustafa Muhibullah of the University of Alabama in a statement.
Compact objects, in the form of black holes, neutron stars and white dwarfs, are the remains of stars that have died. Their small size and powerful gravity means that they're adept at getting close to orbiting companion stars and ripping the stars' outer layers of gas away. The gas swirls around the compact object, falling onto its surface, and this accretionary process usually produces torrents of high-energy X-rays because the stolen gas becomes superheated by the compact object's gravitational vice-like grip.
Because of their weak X-rays, Muhibullah's team refer to them as 'hypersoft X-ray sources'. Since low-energy X-rays and ultraviolet light are next to each other on the electromagnetic spectrum, Muhibullah and his team suspect that the low-energy X-rays are spillover from objects emitting prodigious amounts of ultraviolet. Moreover, they think that these objects are lower-level compact binaries.
They're hard to find though, because the interstellar medium of hydrogen and helium gas between the stars absorbs ultraviolet light. This could be why we have yet to find any hypersoft X-ray sources in our own galaxy, because we have to look through the interstellar medium through the plane of the Milky Way.
Consequently, there could be a large population of hypersoft X-ray sources that remain undiscovered and they could have an important effect on the universe around them.
"These clandestine X-ray sources are actually among the most energetic objects in galaxies, and they could be solving two cosmic mysteries at once," said Muhibullah.
The interstellar medium is filled with ionized gas where atoms have been shorn of electrons. Hot, massive stars do output a lot of high-energy ultraviolet light, but there are not enough of these stars to account for all the ionization. If hypersoft X-ray sources are dumping torrents of ultraviolet into space, they could explain the ionization instead. For stars to form, gas has to be cold and not ionized, so hypersoft X-ray sources could be gently regulating star formation within galaxies.
The second mystery is the puzzle over how exactly type Ia supernova explosions detonate. We know that they are fueled by white dwarfs accreting matter from a close companion star and, once the accumulated matter raises the white dwarf's mass beyond 1.44 times the mass of our sun – known as the Chandrasekhar limit – it explodes, but the details of what on the white dwarf actually ignites and how are fuzzy.
Studying a new breed of compact binary might finally reveal the answers and offer more clues about when white dwarfs become ready to explode.
"If we could find a way to spot these type Ia supernova explosions before they go off, that would be really important," said Jimmy Irwin of the University of Alabama, who is a member of Muhibullah's team. "Right now, we study them after they've exploded and astronomers have struggled to understand what is actually ignited."
Since type Ia supernova explosions are used as markers on the cosmic distance ladder, used for measuring the strength of dark energy and the expansion of the Universe, the benefits from understanding them better are clear to see in our efforts to understand how the Universe is evolving.
The findings were published on Sept. 9 in Nature Astronomy.

A new surface atlas of Phobos will help MMX mission collect its samples
Thanks to JAXA, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, and its sample-return capabilities, we're on the cusp of receiving our first sample from the Martian system—not from Mars itself, but from its largest moon, Phobos. JAXA's Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission is set to launch in October. It will reach Phobos in 2027 and, if successful, return a sample from the moon to Earth in 2031. | 23 |

New analysis reconstructs the dawn of dinosaurs and other reptiles
About 252 million years ago, at the end of the Permian Period, a large proportion of species on Earth rapidly became extinct. After this mass extinction, many groups of organisms began to recover, while reptiles known as archosauromorphs—the group that includes dinosaurs and crocodiles—proliferated. | 20 |

Scientists Create New Antibody For Virus That Infects 95% of People
https://www.sciencealert.com/images/2026/04/AntibodyGraphic.jpg The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is one of the world's most common viruses, thought to be lurking in 95 percent of adults. For most people, it causes no obvious symptoms.
But EBV is more than a short-term infection.
Once it enters the body, EBV can stay for life, and it has been linked to several cancers, multiple sclerosis, and other severe health complications.
Now, scientists have given us a promising new way to fight it.
A team from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and the University of Washington in the US developed antibodies that target two proteins on the surface of EBV particles back in February.
These proteins help the virus unlock access to our B cells, a type of white blood cell that plays a central role in the immune system.
Blocking their activity would prevent EBV from taking hold in the first place and may also be enough to prevent its reactivation later in life.
https://www.sciencealert.com/images/2026/02/EBVMS-642x361.jpg An electron micrograph showing Epstein-Barr virus particles. (NIAID)
In experiments with mice carrying human-like immune systems, one of those antibodies protected the animals from EBV infection.
The work done here also gets around a perennial problem with developing EBV antibodies: the virus is so ubiquitous in its attack on the body that finding specific immune cells designed to fight it and to base antibodies on becomes very difficult.
"Finding human antibodies that block Epstein-Barr virus from infecting our immune cells has been particularly challenging because, unlike other viruses, EBV finds a way to bind to nearly every one of our B cells," said biochemist Andrew McGuire at the time.
"We decided to use new technologies to try to fill this knowledge gap and we ended up taking a critical step toward blocking one of the world's most common viruses."
https://www.sciencealert.com/images/2026/04/MouseProcess.jpg Specially bred mice were used to produce human antibodies. (Chhan et al., Cell Rep. Med., 2026)
One of the smartest parts of the process was using mice bred to produce genetically human antibodies, which means a better chance they'll be accepted by the human body when injected, if and when the research gets to that stage.
When the animals were exposed to the two EBV proteins, gp350 and gp42, mouse cells triggered the precise immune response the researchers were looking for, thereby enabling precisely targeted antibodies.
Ultimately, the researchers isolated 10 new antibodies in the lab – two targeting gp350 and eight targeting gp42 – and, when tested in living mice, one of these antibodies showed particularly promising protection against EBV.
"Not only did we identify important antibodies against Epstein-Barr virus, but we also validated an innovative new approach for discovering protective antibodies against other pathogens," said pathobiologist Crystal Chhan.
"As an early-career scientist, it was an exciting finding and has helped me appreciate how science often leads to unexpected discoveries." https://www.sciencealert.com/images/2026/05/FOMO-1200x628-_Dont-miss-the-next-breakthrough_-cosmic-colourful-642x336.jpg When EBV causes noticeable illness in humans, it usually first presents as infectious mononucleosis, also known as glandular fever. After that, it sticks around in the body in a dormant, noninfectious state and can become much more dangerous – especially in those with weakened immune systems.
One hope for these antibodies is that they might be used in the hundreds of thousands of organ and bone marrow transplants performed each year. These transplants require immunosuppression, which can leave people vulnerable to EBV.

Wikimedia Commons

Chem Circularity.

Naked Science. | 36 |

| 10 | Space RSS Feed Scientists study 3,000 supernovas and discover that dark energy may be evolving
A catalog of almost 3,000 white dwarfs that exploded as type Ia supernovas after overfeeding on companion stars indicates that dark energy, the mysterious force accelerating the expansion of the universe, is changing over time.
The discovery, in conjunction with data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES), backs results revealed from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) published in 2024 that suggested dark energy's influence is weakening.
That means that the team's research doesn't just involve the most comprehensive catalog of type Ia supernovas; it presents the clearest picture yet of the evolution of the universe and the influence of dark energy.
"We've rebuilt 3 decades of astronomical observations into a single, consistent framework," team member Ryan Camilleri of the University of Queensland said in a statement."We combined our data with other cosmic measurements, including relic light from the Big Bang and maps of how galaxies are distributed through space.
"Instead of confirming the standard model of cosmology, which assumes dark energy is fixed and unchanging, we have more evidence that dark energy may change over time."
How do exploding white dwarfs tell us about dark energy?
White dwarfs are the smoldering stellar remnants that are left over when stars with around the mass of the sun exhaust the fuel for nuclear fusion in their cores. This ends the outward pressure that supports a star against its own gravity, meaning the star's core collapses as the outer layers are shed. The core becomes a white dwarf, and for single stars, that is the end. But around 50% of sun-sized stars have a binary companion, and this can lead to renewed activity and a change in the star's fate.
If the white dwarf and its companion are close enough together, the dead star begins stripping away the outer layers of its companion. As this material builds on the white dwarf, it pushes the stellar remnant's mass over the so-called Chandrasekhar limit, allowing it to go supernova.
These cosmic explosions are called type Ia supernovas, and their light output is so uniform that these events are referred to as standard candles. They are of vital importance because measuring how their light has been redshifted as it travels means type Ia supernovas can be used to measure cosmic distances.
"Over the years we've learned a lot more about how supernovae behave so we've been able to go back and apply that improved understanding to older data," Camilleri said. "Extensive work has been done to link observations from different telescopes with different capacities and take into account issues such as cosmic dust and galaxy mass which can affect the light coming from a supernova.
"We also incorporated more subtle effects such as gravitational lensing, which is the bending and magnification of light around large objects as it travels from[...] | 2 |

| 13 | Google News Content : ScienceAlert : The Best in Science News and Amazing Breakthroughs Earth's Crust Is 'Unzipping' Under Italy
https://www.sciencealert.com/images/2026/09/apennines.jpg Deep beneath our feet, the slow machinery of Earth is always turning.
Continents collide. Tectonic plate edges slip, one beneath the other, into the mantle. Mountains rise, and chasms yawn, and beneath it all, the ever-churning process of convection – at a pace so gradual that, to human eyes, the world appears unchanging.
For us, working backward from surface geology to the chthonic processes still sculpting it is a bit like trying to reconstruct a movie from a single frame.
And one particularly puzzling frame can be found in the Apennine mountain range that forms the backbone of the Italian peninsula.
Here, the crust is pulling apart along the mountain range, even as it is being squeezed together along its outer edge. Parts of the region are rising; others are sinking. And earthquakes on either side of the range tell similarly contradictory stories.
Now, geologists led by Stefano Tavani of the University of Florence think they have figured out the answer: Earth's crust is 'unzipping' under Italy, producing the strange geology on the land above.
It's a process known as delamination, in which the dense lower crust and attached lithosphere peel away from the crust above and sink into the mantle.
Beneath the Apennines, that process is not occurring everywhere at the same time, according to Tavani and his colleagues; rather, just like a zipper, it has a single front, known as a hinge, where the peeling is happening, and that front is slowly migrating under Italy toward the Adriatic foreland.
But to understand why this is having the effect it does on Earth's surface, we need to rewind the movie.
https://img.youtube.com/vi/G2_MbZdxaTI/0.jpg
The Apennine Mountains run for some 1,200 kilometers (745 miles) along the length of the Italian peninsula and have long posed a geological puzzle.
Like many mountain ranges, the Apennines were built by tectonic plates pushing together, crumpling and thickening Earth's crust over millions of years, producing soaring peaks.
But the tectonic system beneath Italy didn't simply keep pushing in the same way. As the slab of rock sinking into the mantle gradually retreated, the crust behind the growing mountain range was pulled apart, opening the Tyrrhenian Sea.
This left the Apennines in an unusual situation. Even as the outer edge of the mountain range continued to be squeezed together, the crust farther back was being stretched apart.
"The paradox of how horizontal contraction and extension can occur simultaneously in convergent mountain belts remains a fundamental and largely unresolved problem in continental dynamics," reads a description of the contradiction in a 2006 Annals of Geophysics report.
For millions of years, these opposing movements were parts of the same tectonic system. Between around 10 and 2 million years ago, roughly 100 kilometers of shortening in the central Apennines was matched by a similar amount of extension in the Tyrrhenian region behind them.
This simultaneous contraction and extension has previously been attributed to slab rollback – the retreat of the sinking slab, stretching the crust behind the mountain front even as contraction continued farther east.
But starting around 2 million years ago, something changed. The major phase of extension that opened the Tyrrhenian Sea came to an end, and shortening along the Apennine front subsequently slowed dramatically.
The paradoxical deformation of the mountain range, however, continued. Something else seemed to be going on.

Mysterious Viper With a 'Spider' For a Tail Reveals Another Surprise
https://www.sciencealert.com/images/2026/09/ViperSnake.jpg A number of creatures on Earth possess a sting in their tails – but there's only one animal known to science with a spider for a tail.
The aptly named spider-tailed horned viper (Pseudocerastes urarachnoides) from Iran is one of the most bizarre snakes in the world, having evolved a strange appendage on its tail that looks remarkably like an arachnid, even down to its creepy spider 'legs'.
In a new study published in The Anatomical Record, researchers used high-resolution micro-CT scans to peer inside the viper for the first time, expanding what we know about this strange snake and its even stranger tail.
What they found is an example of "extreme" evolution not of the viper's skeleton, but of its scaly skin.
When scientists first encountered a specimen of the viper decades ago, they initially thought the odd growth might be a deformity of some kind.
But subsequent discoveries revealed the spider-like growth isn't a bug. It's a feature. And one that the viper uses to deadly effect.
Spine-chilling footage of P. urarachnoides in action shows how the snake cunningly lures prey with its faux spider:
https://img.youtube.com/vi/XFjoqyVRmOU/0.jpg
Like a skilled puppeteer, the viper lies in wait.
Its body is entirely still, blending in with its rocky surrounds, the picture of perfect camouflage.
All the snake has to do is occasionally jiggle its tail, and it looks to the rest of the world like a spider skittering across the rocks.
As the footage shows, trying to catch that spider is the last thing some birds ever do.
This kind of mimicry behavior is called caudal luring, and it's been observed in dozens of snakes.

It's just that when most snakes wiggle their tails to get the attention of their prey, they don't have the advantage of a realistic-looking spider prop to help sell the illusion.
In the new study, researchers examined the first specimen of the spider-tailed horned viper to come to the attention of scientists, which was collected in 1968 by the Field Museum in Chicago, and later came to be considered the representative holotype for the species.
"For me, the spider appendage is just so incredibly realistic-looking, it is hard to believe that it isn't actually a spider when you see it moving," herpetologist Sara Ruane from the Field Museum told ScienceAlert.
"Even when I handle the holotype specimen and move the tail, it looks incredibly like a real spider." P. urarachnoides was only recognized as its own distinct species in a study published in 2006, after researchers found another of its kind and realized the strange tail was actually a trait, not a one-off unique to the 1968 specimen.

"As there was only the single specimen, it was not possible to say whether the peculiar growth of the tip of the tail had a genetic origin or was, perhaps, some sort of tumor or caused by some parasite," researchers recounted in the 2006 study.
"Thus, the specimen languished, but was not forgotten, for nearly four decades."
Twenty years later, the spider-tailed horned viper has been the subject of various published studies, but its skeletal anatomy has never been comprehensively studied.

Mercury is shrinking more than we thought
Mercury's surface is riddled with wrinkles, evidence of a once-larger planet that has shrunk over time. A new study finds that Mercury may have contracted 10% to 30% more than previously thought—a loss of nearly 12 miles (19 kilometers) of total diameter since the planet formed—due to debris from impact craters obscuring signs of the planet's shrinking. | 1 |
