🩸Donor Selection
🤔18–65 years → Usual donor age.
🤔60 years → Maximum age at first donation.
🤔**>50 kg** → Donor-selection weight criterion.
🤔**<50 kg** → Vasovagal reactions become more common.
🤔**>13 g/dL** → Minimum stated Hb criterion for men.
🤔**>12 g/dL** → Minimum stated Hb criterion for women.
🤔12 weeks → Minimum interval between whole-blood donations in males.
🤔16 weeks → Minimum interval between whole-blood donations in females.
🤔2 times/week → Plateletpheresis should not exceed this frequency.
🤔24 times/year → Maximum stated annual plateletpheresis frequency.
🤔6 months after delivery/termination → Period during which female donors are not selected.
⛔ Donor Deferment
🤩12 months → Defer after body piercing or tattoo.
🤩12 months → Defer after paid sex or homosexual sex.
🤩12 months → Defer after acupuncture.
🤩2 months → Defer after live vaccinations, e.g. measles or mumps.
🤩28 days after BP stabilized/controlled → Defer if recently started antihypertensive medication.
🤩6–12 months → Defer after a blood transfusion.
🤩6–12 months → Defer after major surgery.
🩵 Infectious Diseases
🩵1 year after full recovery → Hepatitis A.
🩵Last 12 months → Hepatitis B history requiring deferment; active HBsAg +ve also requires deferment.
🩵Permanent → HIV infection.
🩵Permanent → Hepatitis C.
🩵6 months after full recovery → Malaria in an endemic area.
🩵3 years after becoming asymptomatic → Malaria in a non-endemic area.
🩵28 days after full recovery → HSV I/II, VZV, EBV, CMV.
🩵Permanent → HHV-8.
🩵Permanent → Syphilis.
🩵Permanent → Leishmaniasis.
🩵12 months after completion of treatment → Gonorrhea.
🩵2 years after confirmation of cure → Tuberculosis.
🩵Permanent → WHO recommendation for brucellosis.
🩵At least 2 years after full recovery → Council of Europe recommendation for brucellosis.
🩺 Physical Examination
🩵≤37.5°C → Acceptable temperature wording: not more than 37.5°C.
🩵60–100 beats/min → Required pulse range; should also be regular.
🩵At least 50 kg → Weight.
🩵**>13 g/dL** → Male Hb.
🩵**>12 g/dL** → Female Hb.
