Are the Ash'aris among the Sunnis? Question: Are the Ash'aris among the Sunnis? Please clarify. Answer: The Ash'aris are among the Sunnis in that they agree with the Sunnis. They differ from the Sunnis in the matter of the attributes of God, because they only affirm seven attributes of God, and yet they do not affirm them in the manner in which the Sunnis affirm them. Therefore, we should not say that they are among the Sunnis in general, nor should we deny that they are among the Sunnis in general. Rather, we should say that they are among the Sunnis in that in which they agree with the Sunnis, and they differ from the Sunnis in that in which they differ with the Sunnis. The truth is determined by detail, and God Almighty says: "And when you speak, be just." [Al-An'am: 152] Excluding them from the Sunni fold is unjust, and including them among the Sunni fold is unjust, either. It is necessary to give everyone their due. Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymīyyah رحمه الله said:

"Whoever thinks that he can take from the Book and the Sunnah, without taking the Companions as an example and follows other than their path, then he is from the people of innovation."

⚔️ 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗗 𝗢𝗙 𝗔𝗛𝗟 𝗔𝗦-𝗦𝗨𝗡𝗡𝗔𝗛 𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗤𝗨𝗥’𝗔𝗡 ʾAḥmad Ibn Saʿīd ad-Dārimī رحمه الله said:

I said to Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal رحمه الله: “I will say to you my saying, and if you disapprove of anything from it, then say: ‘I disapprove of it.’” I said to him: “We say: The Qur’ān is the speech of Allāh from its beginning to its end, nothing from it is created, and whoever claims that anything from it is created is a disbeliever.” He did not disapprove of anything from it and was pleased with it.

📚 𝗝𝗨𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗘 𝗧𝗢𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗗𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗖𝗛𝗢𝗟𝗔𝗥𝗦 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗜𝗝𝗧𝗜𝗛𝗔𝗗 Imām al-Dhahabī رحمه الله said:

"If everyone who made a mistake in their reasoning (opinion, ijtihad) were to be shunned and labeled as heretics, despite the soundness of their faith and desire to follow the truth, few of the Imams would be safe with us. May Allah have mercy on them all by His grace and generosity."
