When the line between news and political promotion becomes blurred, media neutrality is compromised, voter confusion increases, and the electoral playing field becomes uneven. This risk is heightened when economic or political influence is used to promote specific parties or candidates through media content, distorting the flow of public-interest information and effectively turning news platforms into vehicles for political campaigning. In this context, Bangladesh Media Monitor is independently observing and analysing these trends to ensure a clear distinction between journalism and political advertising, to identify undisclosed political promotion, and to bring evidence-based insights into the public domain regarding media responsibility and transparency during the election period.

Centered on the upcoming national parliamentary election, they work under daily risk amid political violence, a deterioration of law and order, and power struggles, yet neither the state nor institutions are willing to take responsibility for that risk. A press card does not stop bullets, does not dispel fear and does not save lives. When journalists are at risk, the truth is left unprotected as well and it is in that vacuum that violence, corruption, and the abuse of power spread even more freely.

As a representative of civil society and someone considered close to the government, responsible language and restrained conduct are expected. Such remarks can incite hostility against field-level journalists and further weaken the position of journalists who are already working in a risky environment. We have noted that he later withdrew his statement. however, the impact of such remarks made in the public sphere does not fade easily. Bangladesh Media Monitor believes that journalists play an indispensable role in safeguarding democracy and good governance. Even in cases of disagreement or criticism, it is the moral responsibility of all conscious citizens and civil society representatives to use respectful and responsible language toward journalists.

This diminishes the importance of genuinely urgent and immediate news and weakens public trust in the media. This incident raises ethical questions in journalism. The inconsistency between facts and the photo card and headline, the irresponsible use of breaking news, and the creation of potential political confusion run contrary to the professional responsibilities of the media. To prevent audience misinformation in the future, greater restraint and accountability are necessary in the use of headlines, photo cards and breaking news.

This means it was not a running or immediate incident. In terms of timing, it does not meet the definition or standard of breaking news. The Badda Police Station of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police stated that the location of the incident was not Nahid Islam’s election office. The office of the National Citizen Party had been moved from that location two months earlier. The site is a building under construction, and the incident was related to extortion. There was no political involvement. The National Citizen Party also issued the same statement, saying the shooting did not occur at their election office and was not politically motivated. In this situation, the claim presented in the photo card is clearly contradicted by the information within the news report itself. While the headline and photo card create the impression of a political attack, the core facts indicate that the incident was a 'non-political crime.' This is an example of misleading framing, where the mode of presentation alters the nature of the actual event. In digital media, most readers react after seeing only the photo card or headline, without reading the full report. As a result, such framing creates misconceptions among the audience and risks spreading an extortion-related incident as political violence. This significantly increases the level of audience misinformation.
