The Cypress Tree (Symbol of Life After Death) Another symbol that can still be found carved on old tombstones in Iran—particularly during (the Islamic period, drawing upon ancient traditions) is the cypress tree. Because it remains evergreen, the cypress came to symbolize the idea that a person’s soul continues to live and remains eternal after the death of the physical body. In ancient Iranian mythology, the words and concepts associated with “tree” and “immortality” (Amərətāt / Ameretat) are etymologically related. Zoroastrians believed that the cypress was a tree that never truly dies and does not shed its leaves; therefore, it became a manifestation of Ameretat (immortality and eternal life). (The tradition of planting cypress trees near fire temples and ancient burial sites is also said to have originated from this belief, serving as a reminder to the viewer that death is not the end of the soul’s existence).
