Well well well
Well well well

St. Thomas Aquinas definitely had a premium brain 😭

Why do you mean so much to me? Help me to find words to explain. Why do I mean so much to you, that you should command me to love you? And if I fail to love you, you are angry and threaten me with great sorrow, as if not to love you were not sorrow enough in itself. Have pity on me and help me, O Lord my God. Tell me why you mean so much to me. Whisper in my heart, I am here to save you. Speak so that I may hear your words. My heart has ears ready to listen to you, Lord. Open them wide and whisper in my heart, I am here to save you. I shall hear your voice and make haste to clasp you to myself. Do not hide your face away from me, for I would gladly meet my death to see it, since not to see it would be death indeed. St. Augustine, Confessions 5

St. Thomas Aquinas, who greatly admired Aristotle and highly valued his philosophy, used these ideas to argue for the existence of God. According to Aristotle and Aquinas, everything that changes does so because a potential is actualized. Every change is the actualization of some potential. But what actualizes those potentials? Something that is already actual. Think of someone kicking a ball. The ball has the potential to move, but that potential is actualized by the kicker. The kicker, in turn, had the potential to kick, and that potential was actualized as well. So an actualized potential brings about the actualization of another potential. Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas argued that, for anything to change, something else must actualize its potential. If we think of this as a chain, then that chain cannot go on forever. There must ultimately be a final actuality that has no potential waiting to be actualized. The "Actus purus"/Pure Act. He actualizes everything else, but in Him there is no unrealized potential and therefore no change. The final unmoved mover/unactualized act is God. That is St. Thomas Aquinas' Argument from Motion.

The story goes that Aristotle strongly opposed that idea. He firmly believed that change is real and not merely an illusion. So he proposed that change exists because potentials exist in some sense, and change occurs when those potentials are actualized. A seed has the potential to become a tree, and an egg has the potential to become an adult chicken. Given the right conditions, those potentials become actual. This is Aristotle's theory of motion [motion is a general term for change instead of the term as we know it in physics]

On a more serious note, he's not alone in this philosophy. There were many philosophers, with Parmenides being the main one, who argued that change is impossible and that everything that appears to change is actually just an illusion. To illustrate this, he had the maxim: "What is, is; and what is not, is not." Therefore, it's impossible for something that isn't to come into being. Consequently, change itself is impossible. If Parmenides was right, then motion, aging, our birth, and everything else are technically just illusions, just like what my dude above is saying.

We almost got arrested today. My friend Fikir and I decided to visit Entoto Park. It was honestly a surreal experience. We walked about 3 km into the park before deciding to rest for a few minutes on a bench in a quiet, forest-surrounded area. The bench was clearly built for people to sit on, or so we thought. About ten minutes later, two policemen carrying the famous dula approached us and told us to come with them. They said we weren't allowed to sit on those benches. There wasn't a single sign, warning, or even a subtle indication anywhere that sitting there was prohibited. We cooperated fully. We handed over our IDs, answered every question they asked, and explained that we were visitors who had even paid the entrance fee to access the park. We repeatedly tried to explain that there were no signs telling visitors not to sit there. I mean how would we know? His response: "አለማወቅ ከተጠያቂነት አያድንም." 🥀🥀 He took out his phone and started searching for the number of the patrol so they could come take us to the local administration station. At that point, we kept trying to explain ourselves, hoping he'd understand we had made an honest mistake, if it was even a mistake to begin with. Logic only works for some people; Some operate with tendencies and moods. Eventually, and seemingly against his own wishes, he reluctantly decided to let us go. እና ተጠንቀቁ አንዳንዴ ወንበር ጌጥ ነው 😂
