💻 Panic Refunds $12.36 Tariff Surcharge to Playdate Buyers
Panic, maker of the Playdate handheld, is automatically refunding the $12.36 tariff surcharge it previously charged customers — after receiving its own refund from the US government following a Supreme Court ruling against the tariffs.
The company confirmed the refunds via email to affected customers, with money expected to land in accounts within days. "It's just not our money to keep, and it felt really good to give it back," Panic co-founder Cabel Sasser told Game Developer.
The move stands in contrast to Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft, which have not passed tariff refunds on to consumers — and have instead cited the returned funds as a positive impact on their own financials. Nintendo is currently facing class-action lawsuits over the issue, arguing in a court filing that it only made "modest and selective price adjustments." Those cases remain undecided.
Panic acknowledged the refund process required significant internal work but said the decision was straightforward. Co-founder Neven Mrgan noted on Bluesky that the tariff announcement also cost the company sales before the refunds became available.

🎮 Humankind 2 Announced for PC in 2027 With Climate Systems
Amplitude Studios revealed Humankind 2 at Gamescom Opening Night Live, targeting a PC release in 2027. The sequel to the 2021 4X strategy game expands on its mix-and-match cultural evolution system, letting players adopt new cultures each Era to unlock exclusive customs through expanded progression trees.
A new climate system will reshape the strategic map over time, forcing players to weigh short-term growth against long-term environmental consequences. Amplitude says the sequel incorporates player feedback from the original to deliver new progression systems, improved visuals, and a modernized UI.

🎮 Metro 2039 Reveals Gameplay, Launches February 2027
A new gameplay trailer for Metro 2039 debuted at Gamescom Opening Night Live, showing off the post-apocalyptic shooter's new protagonist — the Stranger — and its central conflict: dismantling the Novareich, an authoritarian regime led by Hunter, the Spartan Ranger from Metro 2033.
Developer 4A Games says this entry shifts focus toward human atrocity over mutant threats, describing the game's themes as "the cost of silence, the horror of tyranny, the price of freedom" — framing the studio explicitly drew from its experience developing the game during the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Gameplay features weapon crafting, stealth, and combat across Moscow's irradiated tunnels and surface. 4A Games also says Metro 2039 will serve as a valid entry point for newcomers despite being a sequel to the original trilogy.
Metro 2039 launches on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S in February 2027.

🎮 The Duskbloods Playtest Sign-Ups Beat Elden Ring Nightreign
FromSoftware's Switch 2 exclusive The Duskbloods received more playtest applications than Elden Ring Nightreign, producer Yasuhiro Kitao revealed during a Famitsu livestream. "We were really surprised," Kitao said.
The result is notable given Nightreign's test spanned PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — platforms with far larger install bases than the Switch 2. Elden Ring Nightreign went on to sell over 5 million copies, with its DLC moving 2 million units in under a week.
The closed network test itself had a rocky start, with server issues forcing FromSoftware to cancel its first session. The Duskbloods is directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki and has no confirmed release date, though it remains slated for sometime this year.

🎮 Terranigma Finally Gets a Global Re-release in 2027
Classic SNES action-RPG Terranigma is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, Switch 2, and PC in early 2027, published by Clear River Games in cooperation with Square Enix.
Originally developed by Quintet and published by Enix, the 1996 title only ever received an English-language release in Europe — Enix's US subsidiary had closed before it could launch in North America. It has since become one of the most sought-after European SNES cartridges.
The re-release is described as faithful to the original's pixel art and music, with Clear River promising "a host of upgrades, tweaks and bonus features," though specifics were not detailed. Rights had long been considered a barrier following Enix's merger with Square and Quintet's dissolution, but those issues appear resolved. The game is the third entry in a trilogy that includes Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia.

🎮 The Witcher 4 Targets 2028 Release, CDPR Teases Surprises at Gamescom
CD Projekt Red is "targeting" a 2028 release for The Witcher 4, joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski confirmed in a new video ahead of Gamescom. More than 500 people are currently working on the title, which Nowakowski called "our biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date." The 2028 window is a target, not a firm date — CDPR's previous titles, including The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, both faced delays.
No Witcher 4 news is planned for Gamescom itself. Instead, CDPR will showcase The Witcher 3's upcoming Songs of the Past DLC and has teased "a surprise or two" during its Gamescom livestreams.
The Witcher 4 kicks off a new trilogy that will also include The Witcher 5 and 6, all planned within a six-year window. CDPR also has Cyberpunk 2, a multiplayer-focused Witcher title, and a Scopely partnership project in development.

🎮 Final Fantasy Resonance Details Revealed Ahead of October Launch
Square Enix has shared an extensive look at Final Fantasy Resonance, its HD-2D reimagining of mobile title Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius, due out in October.
The turn-based RPG lets players explore regions including the militaristic Zoldaad Empire and the mage city of Mysidia. Combat centres on a Vision system where legendary Final Fantasy heroes — including Firion, Vaan, Lightning, Noctis, and Clive Rosfield — fight alongside the main party. Staggering all enemies in one turn triggers a Resonance, unleashing a CG-animated special attack. Espers such as Bahamut, Odin, Leviathan, and Carbuncle can also be summoned for three-turn bursts.
Strengthening Visions requires rare magicite, forcing players to choose which heroes to upgrade. Completionist content includes optional boss fights against Gilgamesh and Ultima Weapon.

🏢 Compulsion Games Completes Management Buyout From Microsoft
Compulsion Games, the Canadian studio behind South of Midnight and We Happy Few, has officially split from Microsoft via a management buyout led by studio head Guillaume Provost. Microsoft transferred all IP rights back to the studio.
Provost confirmed to GamesBeat that the majority of senior staff stayed on, though some left after he warned the studio faced potential closure. "I did this deal for the team first and foremost," he said, adding that staff "would rather eat rocks and drink gasoline rather than be split up."
Revenue from Steam purchases of South of Midnight now goes directly to Compulsion. Part of the team is already working on an unannounced game that was in development before the split. Provost is now seeking new financial backers.
Compulsion is one of five Xbox studios Microsoft divested. Double Fine similarly regained independence; Ninja Theory and Undead Labs were sold to unnamed buyers; Arkane is in a consultation period under French law. The moves are part of an Xbox business "reset" under new CEO Asha Sharma, which also saw 1,600 layoffs in July with another 1,600 expected this fiscal year.

🎮 CoD: MW4 Day-One DLC Features Medal of Honor Recipient Kyle Carpenter
Activision has announced the Call of Duty Endowment Valor Pack for Modern Warfare 4, launching October 23 alongside the game. It adds real-life Medal of Honor recipient Kyle Carpenter as a playable character, with proceeds benefiting the Call of Duty Endowment — Activision's charity helping veterans find employment after service.
Carpenter earned the Medal of Honor after throwing himself on a grenade in Marjah, Afghanistan, on November 21, 2010, to shield fellow Marine Nick Eufrazio. He was unconscious for five weeks, lost an eye, and had his teeth stripped from the blast. President Barack Obama awarded him the Medal of Honor in 2014.
Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23. A preorder beta is live now, with an open beta running August 28–September 1.

💻 Genki's Manta Controller Hits $371K on Kickstarter
Genki has launched the Manta, a feature-heavy wireless gamepad built around a 2.9-inch LCD screen for on-the-fly profile switching, input mapping, and connection monitoring. Its Kickstarter campaign has raised $371,000 against a $100,000 goal.
The controller packs drift-resistant tunneling magnetoresistance analog sticks, adjustable trigger travel, maglev haptics with two independent linear motors, and "Pulse Buttons" that detect travel without electrical contact. 🎮 Modern Warfare 4 Beta Launches August 21 With Reworked Movement
Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 beta begins early access on August 21, with the full game launching October 23 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2.
The studio overhauled its mantle system to allow transitions into slides, ADS, and mid-mantle cancels — a direct response to criticism of Modern Warfare 2's sluggish movement. Infinity Ward opted against adopting Treyarch's omnimovement but retained supine positioning animations.
On matchmaking, Activision confirmed the beta will run both its new "classic" system — which Black Ops 7 data shows reduced quit rates and improved ping since Season 5 — and an Open playlist with minimal skill-based matching. A classic movement playlist for MW4 hasn't been planned, but creative director Geoff Smith said it's "not outside the realm of possibility" post-launch.

🏢 GTA 6 Leaker Claims Full Game Access as Rockstar Scrambles

The group has claimed "full access" to the game, raising concerns that story spoilers — including the ending — could surface well before the title's release.

💻 Blood of Dawnwalker PC Requirements Cap RAM at 16GB
Rebel Wolves has revealed the full PC specs for The Blood of Dawnwalker ahead of its September 3 launch. Notably, 16GB of RAM covers every preset from 1080p/30fps up to 4K/60fps — an unusually low ceiling for a modern title.
The minimum spec (1080p/30fps, Low) asks for a GTX 1060 or RX 580 with 6GB VRAM. Hitting 1440p/60fps (High/Recommended) requires an RTX 4060 or RX 7600 XT with 8GB VRAM. The Ultra 4K/60fps target steps up to an RTX 4070 Ti or RX 9070 with 12GB VRAM. Storage sits at 60GB SSD across all presets.
The game, from former CD Projekt Red developers at Rebel Wolves, also launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on the same date.
