FOA statement: Friends of Al-Aqsa is deeply disappointed by the General Medical Council's response following the submission of a petition signed by more than 11,000 people calling for action in relation to Dr Eastland Staveley's reported public statements. While the GMC has confirmed that an investigation into Dr Staveley is underway, it has not imposed any interim restrictions on his medical practice while that investigation is ongoing. Given the seriousness of the concerns raised, this decision is deeply disappointing and risks undermining public confidence in the medical profession and its regulator. The GMC's own guidance states that doctors must uphold the highest standards of conduct, act with integrity, and justify the trust placed in them by patients and the wider public. The reported public endorsement of violence against babies is wholly incompatible with these standards and raises serious questions about judgement, professionalism, and fitness to practise. Interim measures exist to protect public confidence while serious concerns are investigated. In a case that has attracted widespread public concern and prompted more than 11,000 people to sign a petition calling for action, we believe the GMC should have exercised those powers pending the outcome of its investigation. Friends of Al-Aqsa therefore calls on the GMC to urgently reconsider its position, impose an interim suspension on Dr Staveley while its investigation is ongoing, and demonstrate that it is committed to upholding the standards expected of the medical profession and maintaining public trust in its regulatory responsibilities.
