“So you’re telling me there is no justice in the world,” the boy said, repeating what he had just heard.
“There is no justice,” the man replied evenly. “But the world tends toward it.”
Leaning closer, the boy struggled to keep pace with the man’s reasoning.
“Human beings attempt to manufacture justice,” the man continued, “and fail. Because they confuse it with punishment.”
The boy hesitated. “Then what should I do?”
“How does one go on living,” he added, “knowing there is no justice where he lives?”
The man regarded him steadily.
“Is it not true,” he said at last, “that God has done you an injustice as well?”
“I don’t understand.” The boy shifted, uneasy.
“The incongruence between your body and your soul.”
The boy nodded, his expression worn yet stoic, as the man lowered his voice.
“Tell me; does that not make your God imperfect?”
“And unfair?”

Alas poor gentleman
He look’d not like the ruins of his youth
But like the ruins of those ruins

The night was black, the rain unyielding, and a tragedy bled its ending into my hands.

“He had the far more remarkable talent of making himself invisible—in a room, in a car, a virtual ability to dematerialize at will—and perhaps this gift was only the converse of that one: the sudden concentration of his wandering molecules rendering his shadowy form solid, all at once, a metamorphosis startling to the viewer.”
