A little throwback to my SPM English Essentials session with 24 wonderful girls from Sekolah Tun Fatimah last Tuesday. We explored useful tips, tricks and techniques for tackling three sections of the Reading paper: Short Texts, Extended Text and Gapped Text. We also focused on Part 3: Extended Writing, specifically article and review writing. For review writing, the girls examined authentic materials—such as product descriptions, labels, advertisements and customer reviews—to gather relevant details about sports shoes and a piece of clothing. They then learnt how to transform those details into well-structured, polished product reviews. I truly loved the determination everyone showed throughout the session. I sincerely hope the girls benefited from the activities and can confidently apply the techniques in their SPM preparation. Thank you, STF, for the invitation and for giving me this meaningful opportunity to share with your wonderful students! 🫶🏻

Happy 69th Independence Day, Malaysia! 🇲🇾 In conjunction with our Independence Day celebration, I am sharing a collection of teaching notes on People and Culture: one of the four core themes in the KPM English Language Curriculum under the Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Menengah (KSSM). Through different topics, these notes celebrate the beauty of Malaysia—from our diverse communities, languages and traditional food to our customs, performing arts and shared values. They are designed to help pupils develop relevant ideas and useful vocabulary for their English speaking and writing tasks. May this small Merdeka sharing support fellow English teachers in creating meaningful lessons while encouraging our pupils to appreciate Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage and unity in diversity. Feel free to use and share these notes with your pupils. Selamat Hari Kebangsaan! 🇲🇾 Malaysia MADANI: Kesejahteraan Dinikmati

My ultimate plan for today’s lesson is to revise Article Writing using the Perak Trial SPM 2026 question: Teenagers and Pets. I’m starting with a Speaking Duos activity to get students talking about topics related to pets. From there, they will move into Jigsaw Reading to activate their prior knowledge and enrich their understanding of each content point in the writing task. Then, everything comes together in the final stage: writing the full article and applying the techniques they have learned throughout the lesson. So the flow is basically: Speak → Explore → Enrich → Write ✍️ Hopefully, by the time they start writing, they are not staring at a blank page trying to figure out what to say because the ideas, vocabulary and content have already been built along the way. Feel free to adapt this in your classroom, teachers! 🫶🏻 Credit: Trial SPM 2026 - Perak (Paper 2)

A little post-Trial SPM intervention for my students ✍️ After going through their writing, I noticed a few language errors that appeared quite frequently. So I prepared this 100-Error Editing Lab to give them more focused practice before the real SPM. The idea is simple: spot the error, correct it, understand the rule, and hopefully become a little more careful in their own writing. Still a work in progress, but I hope this helps them strengthen the areas they need most 🤍

100-ERROR EDITING LAB 🚨 Focus: SPM, F4-F5 🚨 Targeted Students - Advanced 🚨 Targeted Skills: Grammar in Context Please note that these materials are intended for personal and educational use only. Do not sell them.

Alhamdulillah for the Silver Award at this year’s KID-PG! 🥈 A little level-up from last year’s award, and definitely a reminder that progress is progress. A huge shout-out to my kakak-kakak too, this achievement belongs to all of us. Truly reflecting the saying, “Many hands make light work.” Couldn’t have done it without the teamwork, support, ideas, and energy everyone brought along the way. Insha-Allah, one step at a time!

It’s finally out! 📢 The official SPM 2026 examination schedule is finally here. Seeing it brings such mixed feelings as a teacher: excited, nervous, hopeful, and somehow emotional knowing that the final lap is getting closer 🥹 To all my SPM candidates, go through the schedule properly, take note of your papers and plan the remaining time wisely. The countdown officially begins. May Allah ease our journey, grant us strength and clarity, and bless every effort, sacrifice and prayer from students, teachers and parents 🤲🏻 We’ve come this far together. One final push 🤍

I’m also sharing some video links that I used in yesterday’s lesson to initiate the discussion on budi bahasa and the worksheet I had given to the students. Since we ran out of time, I moved the Socratic Circle to today’s lesson instead. I think it actually turned out quite well because the students had some time to do preliminary preparation and research, so today’s discussion became more meaningful. For the Socratic Circle, students in the inner circle share their thoughts and respond to one another, while those in the outer circle listen, take notes and later summarise the discussion. Once the time is up, both groups switch seats and roles, so everyone gets the chance to participate. I also act as the moderator to keep the discussion flowing smoothly. My students even went, “Wow Sir, it looks like we’re sitting in a meeting room!” 😂

Sharing some materials that you can use in conjunction with our upcoming Independence Day to educate our students about patriotism, unity, and love for our country. Feel free to adapt and adopt these activities according to your students’ needs and classroom context. One thing I’ve learnt from doing these activities is that you don’t necessarily have to do everything in one go. There’s no need to rush through all the activities in a single lesson. Instead, you could stretch them across two days of lessons, giving students more time to think, discuss, reflect, and truly engage with the ideas. After all, teaching patriotism is not just about celebrating Independence Day, it is about helping our students understand what it truly means to love, appreciate, and contribute to the country they call home 🇲🇾❤️

Sharing this here for any novice English teachers from Johor, Selangor, Perak, and Sarawak who might be interested in this programme. It has been almost a year since I started my journey with Teach for Malaysia, and I would say that the experience has greatly shaped the way I think as a teacher and, most importantly, strengthened my teaching skills. One thing I have come to believe strongly is this: Before we empower our students, we need to empower our teachers first. When teachers are given the right support, exposure, community, and opportunities to grow, they become better equipped to create meaningful learning experiences for their students. So, if you are a novice English teacher looking for a space to learn, grow, reflect, and become better at what you do, this might be an opportunity worth exploring. Empower teachers first, and they will empower their students.
