...drove a few hours to visit a friend's house, talked late into the night over hard ciders, and ate the best chicken (sourdough!!??) pot pie-ever- while discussing all the important things ... There are few better things in life.

Purslane (Portulaca oleracea) is a common type of “weed” you tend to see out here and you can find it just about anywhere in the desert/ foothills. It is high in Omega 3’s and antioxidants, and you can toss it into things like salads, stir fries, soups and stews, and more! It can also be used in a similar fashion to how one would use aloe- as a poultice for minor burns, scrapes, or insect bites. I foraged some and turned it into a delicious peppery little pesto 😋 🍃 not disappointed! Threw it over some toast and butter, going to try over pasta later, maybe even throw it in an omelette tomorrow morning, who knows!

My levels of cortisol and rage are already maxed out. Therefore, I have no desire to torture myself by watching the new “Odyssey” film. The Iliad and Odyssey are for me, just as for Dominique Venner, sacred texts. Foundational to European civilisation. I view this film in the same way as the “The Rings of Power” – a treasured story of ours being tarnished by malicious forces. Anyway, recommendation if you have children – Usbourne’s Illustrated Stories from the Greek Myths. It has served us well many a story night. Great stuff!

Made a hearty batch of fermented salsa the other day. I find this lasts months in the fridge and just tastes better over time. I don’t have an exact recipe. I measure everything with my heart ❤️. -Tomatoes -Cilantro -Salt -sometimes I add bell peppers. This batch I did not. -Red onion -Lots of raw garlic -Cumin -hot peppers (I used some frozen Carolina reaper from last years garden in this batch) - a splash of kraut juice. Two non traditional ingredients I add to mine that I promise will take it up a notch is adding olive oil and red wine vinegar instead of lime. This made a little over two quarts of salsa. I’d say I did about 2 TBS of olive oil and about 5TBS of red wine vinegar. Just did it to taste. Fermented salsa will taste delicious without it but it does add a unique flavor. The hotter your kitchen, the quicker it will ferment and the longer it sits out, the more “twang” you will get. 1-3 days will do it depending on your preference and temp in your kitchen.

Jewelweed is blooming on the woodland edge all over the East. It's indeed rash season, whether it be poison ivy, nettle stings, heat, or diaper, this muculaginous herb is very soothing for any type of rash. It can be used fresh, or made into frozen ice cubes for later use.

Calendula oil is easy to make and a welcome addition to any herbal medicine cabinet. Calendula flowers are healing and soothing to any skin condition. I discovered it when my babe had a terrible diaper rash that was cleared in less than a day of applying a Calendula based diaper cream. I recently made this jar of oil -- just in time to soothe my poison ivy. Simply buy dried Calendula flowers and cover them for 4 weeks with olive oil. I think tomorrow I will make a balm from simply combining the oil with melted beeswax. Happy Homesteading ❤️

Women need to reclaim their primal mothering instincts. Many women don't feel called to motherhood. It's an epidemic. 😭

^Broth/stock is a great first thing to pressure can if you haven’t tried pressure canning yet. It’s minimal work and has a short processing time (20 min for pints/25 for quarts.) and honestly not a huge loss if something goes wrong your first time PC. Dried beans are also a great first time thing to pressure can since dried beans are so cheap and again minimal work. (soak beans in water and ACV overnight to break down phytic acid making them more digestible. Rinse beans and simmer for 30 min and load up jars). It does have a much longer processing time though—75 min for pints/90 for quarts. -Karissa

Pardon the awkward video, it’s hard to shake a jar with one hand and keep your other steady. 😅 Canning bone broth today for postpartum meal/healing prep. Simmered it with homegrown oregano, rosemary, turmeric, garlic. That gel from being in the fridge over night. 👌🏻 -Karissa

The kitchen that never sleeps. ❤️ One of the simple pleasures of life that bring much joy to me—seeing herbs from the garden hanging for drying, something fermenting on the counter, seeing my canning shelf (the shelf I use is a shelf my dad built in shop class when he was in high school 🥰) or waking up the next day to home canned goodies that need to be labeled and stored, water glassed eggs in jars, scrap vinegar brewing, my thrifted home apothecary shelf with home grown dried herbs, fermented honey garlic and Elecampane, etc. coordinating with cute up cycled jars, homemade labels, etc. It’s eclectic and messy, but those small gestures that make a home cozy.❤️ -Karissa
