Formal Complaint Regarding Political Gesture by Iranian Player Mohammad Mohebi During FIFA World Cup 2026 Match Against New Zealand Dear FIFA Disciplinary Committee / Ethics Committee, I am writing to formally complain about a serious incident that occurred during the FIFA World Cup 2026 match between the Islamic Republic of Iran and New Zealand. During the match, Iranian player Mohebi made a symbolic gesture imitating shooting with guns, directed towards spectators/supporters wearing T-shirts that displayed the names and pictures of individuals killed by the Iranian regime on January 8 and 9. This gesture constitutes a clear political statement and provocative act, aimed at victims of the regime and their supporters present in the stadium. It is highly inappropriate in the context of a football match and appears to violate FIFA’s regulations on political gestures, discrimination, and bringing the game into disrepute. FIFA’s Laws of the Game and Disciplinary Code explicitly prohibit political, religious, or provocative slogans, statements, or gestures during matches. Such actions undermine the spirit of the game, politicize sport, and can incite tension or distress among spectators, particularly those remembering victims of violence.
