The abundance of forest resources is closely linked to the country’s socio-economic development, and increasing forest cover contributes significantly to the enhancement of ecosystem services. To promote sustainable development and environmental conservation, the government has set targets of designating 30 percent of the country’s total land area as reserved and protected forests and 10 percent as protected natural areas. To date, 1,337 reserved and protected forests have been established, covering 26.11 percent of the country’s land area, while 62 protected natural areas have been designated, covering 6.59 percent. Continued collective efforts are needed to achieve these national conservation goals.
Forest plantations are being established every year while plans are underway to plant 30,000 acres of forest trees or 21.36 million of trees across the country during this rainy season. As special greening tasks, trees are being planted by relevant departments in cooperation with local people in 13 districts in the dry zone, along railroads, on both sides of the ASEAN highway and roads, in Bagan ancient cultural zone, in areas around the Inlay lake and coastal regions.
In accordance with the motto “Let us protect our environment for the prosperity of the Nation,” it is necessary to speed up tree-planting and forest conservation to stabilize and improve ecosystems, to make the entire country green and pleasant and to reduce the impacts of climate change. Therefore, from individual people to regional and departmental organizations are urged to cooperate for forest conservation as a national responsibility to accelerate tree-planting, to carry out conservation tasks to ensure that every tree planted thrives and to expand forest coverage across the country.
Then, the President led the campaign by planting a mahogany tree at a designated place.
Afterward, Vice Presidents U Nyo Saw and Daw Nan Ni Ni Aye, Speakers of the Hluttaws, the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army), union-level officials and union ministers, deputy ministers, departmental staff from ministries and rectors, prorectors, senior lecturers and basic education principals and students from universities, colleges and basic education schools in Nay Pyi Taw and officials simultaneously planted trees cheerfully.
Then, the President and party observed the cheerful tree-planting activities of attendees to the first rainy season national level tree-planting ceremony-2026.
At the rainy season national level tree-planting ceremony today, a total of 3,000 trees from 16 plant varieties including flowering plants like Mesua ferrea, star flower tree, Cassia siamea, gold mohur, Queen crepe myrtle, treasure woods like teak, Xylia dolabriformis, padauk, rosewood and mahogany and evergreen trees like Chukrassia tabularis, oil Eugenia, Mary, Cajeput tree, Gmelina arborea and Cedrela febrifuga.
The combined effects of climate change and El Niño may lead to severe droughts, extreme heatwaves, and forest fires, potentially affecting key sectors such as agriculture, livestock, public health, and the economy. Therefore, it is essential to make advance preparations and implement appropriate mitigation measures.
Among the many approaches to addressing climate change and environmental challenges facing the world today, tree planting and forest conservation are among the simplest, most practical, and most cost-effective solutions. These efforts are accessible to everyone, environ-mentally sustainable, and pro-vide significant benefits for both people and nature.
It can be observed that the 13 districts within the Dry Zone, as well as major towns in the central region that experience high temperatures, have sparse and dry forest cover, with relatively low percentages of forested land. According to studies, more than 60 million trees were planted in the 13 Dry Zone districts between 2016 and 2025, which is estimated to be equivalent to over 200,000 acres of forest cover. During the same period, more than 269.8 million trees of various species were planted across Myanmar, equivalent to approximately one million acres in total. Although timber is utilized for various purposes as needed, the loss of forests can be fully prevented if every tree planted is properly nurtured and survives. Furthermore, through systematic forest management, protection, and conservation measures to prevent the degradation and destruction of natural forests, forest cover can be expanded, thereby helping to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change.
Therefore, when planting trees, it is extremely important to ensure that every tree planted survives. It was further emphasized that only healthy and vigorous seedlings that are at least two years old and more than two feet in height should be used for planting. In line with the saying, “Plant trees when the soil is moist,” the current monsoon season is the most suitable time for tree planting, as rainfall softens and moistens the soil while providing sufficient water for young trees to establish roots and grow successfully. If trees are planted in a timely manner during the monsoon season, they will receive adequate moisture, resulting in better growth and survival rates, and will be able to withstand and survive the hot and dry summer months more effectively.
As tree planting and forest conservation are long-term endeavors, it is essential to carry out these activities continuously on an annual basis. The success of tree-planting and forest-conservation efforts depends on the collective participation and cooperation of the responsible ministry, relevant government agencies, regional and state governments, and the public. Therefore, all stakeholders must work together in an organized manner and actively contribute to these initiatives.
Forests are a vital foundation for economic development, playing a crucial role in regulating the climate and preserving valuable natural resources. Therefore, forest conservation should be regarded as an important investment in the future, and efforts to protect and expand forest resources must be further strengthened to support stable, sustainable, and long-term economic growth.
We must advance environ-mental conservation and pro-mote nature-based economic development models, including the bio economy, green economy, and circular economy. This includes encouraging the growth of forest-based industries such as wood products, furniture manufacturing, plywood, particleboard, sawn timber processing, bamboo pulp and paper production, advanced cotton and bamboo fiber industries, and bamboo-based furniture and consumer products. To support these objectives, the development and expansion of small, medium, and large-scale enterprises must be accelera-
ted.
President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar U Min Aung Hlaing plants a mahogany sapling at the first national level rainy-season tree-growing ceremony for 2026
Nay Pyi Taw June 13
The first national level rainy-season tree-growing ceremony for 2026 took place at Plot No 1, Palway reserve forest, Dekkinathiri Township, Nay Pyi Taw, Union Territory, this morning, attended by President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar U Min Aung Hlaing, who planted a mahogany sapling.
Also present together with the President were Vice Presidents U Nyo Saw and Daw Nan Ni Ni Aye, Pyithu Hluttaw Speaker U Khin Yi, Amyotha Hluttaw Speaker U Aung Lin Dway, Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services General Ye Win Oo, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Kyaw Swa Lin, union level dignitaries, union ministers, the Nay Pyi Taw Council chair, senior military officers from the Office of the Commander-in-Chief, the Nay Pyi Taw Command commander, deputy ministers, personnel of the ministries, employees, rectors, pro rectors, lecturers, teachers, and students of institutions of higher learning and basic education schools in Nay Pyi Taw and officials.
In his address, the President said that with public involvement, the government is sponsoring tree-planting ceremonies to green and beautify the environment, maintain ecosystem balance, prevent natural disasters, and improve the climate. At this ceremony, over 3,000 saplings of 16 different species will be planted. Simultaneously, town-ships, districts, regions, and states will plant 54,810 saplings of various species.
Myanmar is rich in forests, wonderful landscapes, natural watercourses, lakes, biodiversity, and natural resources. The country’s diverse ecosystems, trees, forests, biodiversity, and natural resources serve as the foundation for food production, green economic activities, environmental conservation, and a balanced climate.
Trees and forests are essential for all life on Earth. They gene-rate continuous ecosystem services to maintain a balanced climate, food sufficiency, disaster prevention, and soil and water conservation. In addition, they provide forest products—such as wood, fuelwood, bamboo, rattan, food, and medicines—and environmental services. As trees are the core of the ecosystem, they must be properly cared for, regenerated, and managed.
Myanmar has the second-largest forest cover among ASEAN countries. According to FAO reports, the country’s total forest area in 2025 was 42.15 percent, down 0.04 percent from 42.19 percent in 2020. Hence, the country requires continuous efforts to completely halt forest depletion. It must set its forest cover target at 50 percent of its land area to leave behind a balanced and stable ecosystem for posterity.
Increased combustion of fossil fuels, development in the energy and industrial sectors, transportation expansion, forest depletion, and population growth—alongside transitions in wood use patterns—are identified as the root causes of cli-mate change that countries worldwide, including Myanmar, face today. These causes intensify the release of green-house gases into the atmosphere, worsening climate change and triggering various natural disasters.
The 2026 climate hazard index from certain international weather monitoring teams placed Myanmar among the ten countries most affected by climate change, which will intensify multiple types of natural disasters. The central dry zone of Myanmar consistently ranks among the hottest regions globally. Temperatures in Chauk reached 48.2 degrees Celsius in 2024, 45.3 degrees Celsius in 2025, and 44.9 degrees Celsius this year. Moreover, temperatures in 12 major towns across the area exceeded 41 degrees Celsius.
In particular, forecasts indicate that a very strong Super El Niño could develop by the end of this year, while 2026 and 2027 are expected to be amongthe hottest years on record globally.
