🌟🌟Today Natalia Borzykh joined me for a deep dive into the world of English proficiency tests. Our discussion covers the key differences between popular exams like IELTS, Cambridge (FCE, CAE, CPE), and TOEFL, focusing on their structure, purpose, and the specific challenges they present. Natalia shares her personal experiences with these exams and provides practical advice on preparation strategies, the importance of understanding exam criteria, and the role of a tutor. The conversation also addresses the logistical and financial hurdles for exam-takers in certain regions, such as Russia, and explores alternative options like the Duolingo English Test. We wrap up by sharing valuable resources for self-study and teacher development, emphasizing a strategic and well-informed approach to achieving exam success.
❗️❗️HIGHLIGHTS❗️❗️
🎯 Know Your Goal: Be specific about the exam and score you need (e.g., IELTS 7.0 with no less than 6.5 in each section). Your choice should depend on whether it's for university admission, employment, or immigration.
📊 Exam Deep Dive: The stream compared the main exams in detail:
* IELTS: A multi-level test where every mistake costs you; known for being particularly demanding and stressful, especially the 2.5-hour non-stop format.
* Cambridge (FCE, CAE, CPE): Considered more "humane" with breaks between sections. They are level-specific, which can be less stressful, and the certificates are technically valid for life.
* TOEFL: Focused on academic skills and American English. It's great for practicing university-level tasks and allows for the effective use of templates, which can be helpful for students.
💡 The Human Touch in Preparation: While self-study is possible, a tutor is invaluable. They provide crucial feedback on writing and speaking, help build essential sub-skills (like note-taking), and offer psychological support to prevent burnout.
🌍 Logistical Considerations: For some, taking exams like IELTS may now require traveling to other countries (e.g., Kazakhstan, Turkey). This adds significant cost and complexity, making at-home tests like TOEFL or Duolingo more attractive for some candidates.
✍️ Writing is a Common Hurdle: Statistically, writing is the section where candidates worldwide score the lowest. Preparation must focus on understanding task requirements, using appropriate vocabulary, and structuring arguments logically, often requiring the development of ideas, not just language.
🧠 It's Not Just Language: These exams also test your general knowledge, critical thinking, and ability to handle cognitive overload under pressure. Building "world knowledge" through resources like TED Talks is a key part of preparation.

⭐️ Hello everyone!⭐️
As some of you might remember, I've recently started my Master's degree in Psychology: Coaching and Corporate Consulting. Immersing myself in this new world has been incredibly exciting, and it's got me thinking...
Would you be interested if I occasionally shared some fascinating bits of psychology that relate to teaching, learning, or the corporate world? Maybe even some insights for your personal development? Let me know in the comments!
To dip our toes in, I thought we could start with something simple yet powerful: self-discovery 😌.
A great first step in understanding yourself and others better is to explore basic psychological frameworks. Knowing your own patterns can be a game-changer for communication, stress management, and even your career path.
You could look into concepts like:
❗️ Extrovert vs. Introvert: Where do you get your energy from?
❗️ Temperaments: Are you choleric, sanguine, phlegmatic, or melancholic?
❗️ Archetypes: What universal patterns (e.g., Hero, Caregiver, Rebel) drive your behavior?
❗️ Psychological Defense Mechanisms: How does your psyche protect you from stress (e.g., projection, rationalization)?
🛑A crucial note on language: Tests are in Russian as it's essential to use the native language for such nuanced self-assessments. Taking them in English can lead to "interference" – your "second language personality" might answer differently, skewing the results and preventing you from getting an accurate picture of your true self.
So, for your homework this week: pick at least one concept that intrigues you and see what you discover about yourself!

Managers' "Secret" Blind Spot
Let's talk about a classic move I've seen many times while working with my students (even the most seasoned C-level heroes). They land a shiny new role, their head buzzing with grand strategies, market disruptions, and visionary PowerPoint decks.
And what’s the first thing they do? They dive headfirst into *the work*. The business plan. The numbers. The strategy.
Meanwhile, in the open-plan office (or on the other side of the Zoom screen), their new team is quietly having a collective anxiety attack. 🥴
"What is this new person like?"
"Are there going to be mass layoffs?"
"Does he/she even know what we do here?"
"My last boss was a dragon, please don't let this one breathe fire."
And here is the mistake, my friends: forgetting that they are now managing PEOPLE, not just a P&L sheet.
Your first week and month are not about you proving your strategic genius. They are about your team figuring out if they can trust you. No trust = anxiety, stress, and a nosedive in performance. Not exactly the "quick win" you were going for, right?
So, here’s your pro-tip in Business English and in Management:
Don't just schedule a meeting *about* the work. Schedule a meeting *for* the people.
Your first all-hands meeting? Make it about introductions, your leadership style, and listening. Even better, organize a series of one-on-one meetings. If your team is huge, start with the key people, team leads, and department heads.
Your goal for these chats isn't to dictate a strategy. It's two-fold:
1. To break the ice. A little human connection goes a long way.
2. To build rapport. Show you're a human, not just a title.
Remember: you can have the best strategy in the world, but without a team that's willing to follow you, it's just a beautifully written document gathering digital dust. 🤦🏻♀️

⚠️on one-on-ones https://getlighthouse.com/blog/effective-one-on-one-meeting-tips/#awkwardness
Go on, be the manager who gets it. Your team (and your future results) will thank you for it.

👍So there was everything: freestyle rap to a cool beat, an improv game and even a slide on Bloom's taxonomy. 😄 We sat down with Julie Stolyarchuk, an expert English teacher, to unpack the wild world of improv comedy – and it's not what you think!
We discovered it's a secret weapon for crushing it in your career and personal life. Forget boring training; this is about leveling up your soft skills in a fun, powerful way.
❗️❗️HIGHLIGHTS❗️❗️
🎤 It's NOT Stand-Up Comedy!
Improv is 100% unscripted. You build scenes on the fly with a partner. It’s all about collaboration, not solo jokes, which is exactly how great teams work.
✨ Master the "Yes, And..." Rule
This is the golden rule! Instead of shutting down ideas, you accept them and build something new. Imagine bringing this superpower to your next team meeting—innovation would go through the roof!
🧗 Your Comfort Zone is Calling... and You Should Answer!
Improv pushes you to think on your feet, embrace the unexpected, and laugh when things go off-script. It’s the ultimate training for staying cool under pressure.
💬 Talk About the Tough Stuff
Julia shared how improv (plus therapy) gave her the courage to have difficult conversations she used to avoid. It’s a safe space to find your voice.
📊 It’s Basically Brain Gym
Remember Bloom's Taxonomy? Creation is at the TOP. Improv is pure creation, making it a full-brain workout that sharpens your analysis, evaluation, and creative skills all at once.
🏆 Hard Work Beats Talent
The biggest takeaway? Consistency is king. The people who stick with improv, even if they aren't "naturals," see insane growth. It’s proof that showing up is 90% of the battle. Ready to boost your creativity, communication, and confidence? Maybe it's time to try an improv game!
