⚪ Load Balancer vs. Reverse Proxy vs. API Gateway
🔹 Load Balancer
Distributes incoming network traffic across multiple backend servers (nodes) to ensure no single server is overwhelmed.
⚡️Key Benefits:
- Improves horizontal scalability
- Ensures high availability
- Performs automatic health checks
- Supports traffic routing based on load, IP, or latency
Examples: AWS ELB, HAProxy, NGINX (as load balancer)
🔹 Reverse Proxy
A server that sits in front of one or more backend servers and forwards client requests to them.
⚡️Key Benefits:
- Hides and protects backend servers
- Enables SSL termination
- Adds caching and compression
- Can perform basic load balancing
Examples: NGINX, Apache HTTP Server
🔹 API Gateway
A centralized entry point that handles, manages, and routes API calls—especially in a microservices setup. Acts as a facade to decouple clients from microservice complexity.
⚡️Key Benefits:
- Manages authentication, authorization, and rate limiting
- Performs request/response transformations
- Handles API versioning and lifecycle
- Enables detailed monitoring and analytics
Example: Amazon API Gateway, Kong
⚡️𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐁𝐞 𝐔𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐓𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫?
Yes. Modern architectures often combine all three.
⚡️Example Setup:
- A Reverse Proxy (e.g. NGINX) handles SSL termination and routes requests
- Requests hit an API Gateway for authentication, throttling, and routing to services
- Behind the scenes, a Load Balancer distributes traffic to healthy service instances
On AWS, it’s common to see Amazon API Gateway + Elastic Load Balancer (ELB) used together to build scalable, secure APIs.

🚨 They accidentally deleted their entire AWS Organization account. 🚨
Yes — production S3 buckets. Client data. App Runner services. Gone.
No test. No warning. Just… obliteration.
—
I came across this story on Reddit — and it hit me like a truck.
It started with a routine migration.
They were cleaning up unused accounts during an App Runner transition.
🖱 One wrong click.
✉️ No confirmation email.
⚠️ No warning the org deletion would nuke everything.
24 hours later:
❌ All systems down
❌ No access to S3
❌ Clients in panic mode
❌ No response from AWS Support
They were a small team. No enterprise support.
Just chaos — and partners losing trust by the hour.
—
💔 It’s a brutal reminder:
Cloud infra is powerful — and unforgiving.
This could happen to any of us.
And it made me recheck my entire setup that night.
Here’s what I wished they did — and what I now recommend to every DevOps team I work with:
✅ Enable AWS Backup on all S3 buckets
✅ Use Service Control Policies (SCPs) to block dangerous actions
✅ Practice account recovery simulations
✅ Build a disaster recovery plan that’s actually tested
✅ Upgrade to Business Support — or have a plan to escalate fast

😫 “𝗘𝗖𝗦 𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝗞𝗦? 𝗜 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘆…”
Instead, I ended up stuck in analysis paralysis for weeks.
Docs were vague. Reddit was chaotic. YouTube was a warzone.
Everyone had an opinion — but no one had a clear answer.
Until one day, a simple analogy made it all click.⬇️
🚢 𝗜𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆.
You need to ship packages (containers) reliably across the country.
You’ve got two options:
✅ 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟭: 𝗘𝗖𝗦 = 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗲𝗱𝗘𝘅 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹
You give your package to FedEx.
They handle the trucks, the routes, and the delivery.
You don’t care how it works — it just works.
That’s Amazon ECS.
- Fully AWS-managed orchestration
- Plug-and-play with Fargate
- Tight AWS integrations (CloudWatch, IAM, ALB)
- Less config, faster deployments
Best if:
- You’re AWS-first
- You want simplicity over control
- You need to move fast
⚙️ 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟮: 𝗘𝗞𝗦 = 𝗢𝘄𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗢𝘄𝗻 𝗙𝗹𝗲𝗲𝘁
You buy the trucks. Hire the drivers. Set the routes.
It’s more work — but you control everything.
That’s Amazon EKS.
- Full Kubernetes power (and pain)
- Portable across cloud/on-prem
- Ideal for microservices, GitOps, service mesh
- Better if you already use K8s
Best if:
- You need Kubernetes flexibility
- You’re doing multi-cloud
- You want granular control

😫 “Do I really need to learn all of this just to become a DevOps engineer?”
Docker. AWS. GCP. Azure. GitHub Actions. GitLab. Jenkins. Terraform. Pulumi. Ansible. Prometheus. Grafana. Loki. Datadog. OpenTelemetry. EKS…
Every week, the list grows.
And so does the overwhelm.
Spoiler: You don’t.
In fact, many companies don’t even know half the tools you’re burning out trying to learn.
Here’s the truth nobody told me:
💡 Don’t chase tools. Master concepts.
Tools come and go.
Concepts stay the same.
When you know the why, learning the how becomes easy.
🔥 Here’s a real-world DevOps roadmap I wish I followed earlier:
🔹 1. Linux
→ Every CI/CD tool, container, and cluster runs on it
→ Learn bash, permissions, networking, and logs
🔹 2. CI/CD
→ Pick one: GitHub Actions or GitLab CI
→ Learn how to automate build → test → deploy
🔹 3. IaC (Infrastructure as Code)
→ Terraform is 🔑
→ Focus on logic and structure, not memorizing syntax
🔹 4. Cloud (Pick ONE)
→ AWS, GCP, or Azure
→ Learn VPCs, compute, IAM, Kubernetes basics
→ Multi-cloud will come naturally later
🔹 5. Kubernetes (Deeply)
→ Don’t just memorize kubectl
→ Understand Pods, Services, HPA, Ingress, and networking
→ Break it, fix it, repeat
🔹 6. Ansible
→ IaC sets it up, Ansible configures it
→ Learn how to manage software/configs on provisioned servers
🔹 7. Observability
→ Setup Prometheus + Grafana + Loki
→ Learn how to monitor, alert, and debug before users even notice
💻 Then do this one project:
Take a real GitHub app : https://lnkd.in/g9nGaNUG
🧹 Delete the Dockerfile, CI/CD, and K8s manifests
🧠 Rebuild everything from scratch using only the README:
✅ Write the Dockerfile
✅ Test with Docker Compose
✅ Build K8s manifests
✅ Deploy to a real cluster (EKS/GKE/AKS)
✅ Automate with CI/CD
✅ Setup observability
✅ Provision with Terraform
No bootcamp will teach you more than this project.
