Because big tech platforms essentially do not have customer support and make it impossible for their users to contact a human, many people experiencing run-of-the-mill tech problems have turned to ChatGPT, which told them to contact us... no... https://www.404media.co/chatgpt-keeps-telling-people-404-media-can-solve-their-tech-support-problems/

🚨 #Google is collecting phone numbers /SIM from your phone by default now without asking for consent, here is how to disable it I have a test phone with stock Android (and hence Google services) to test how the apps I develop behave there etc. The other day I woke up with a notification in that phone, out of the blue Google was telling me they "verified my phone number" basically they stole/collected my phone number from my phone and sent it to their servers without any consent. I know the trust bar is very low, but even then I didn't expect Google to do this. Here is how you can disable the collecting of your phone numbers which is on by default: Go to Settings -> Google -> All Devices -> Privacy & security -> Phone number verification. See attached screenshot. Or even better: switch to #GrapheneOS #LineageOS or other #degoogled systems Please boost and spread with your not-so-techie friends that might be using stock Google phones #boost #boost4reach #security #privacy #andro ...

It's interesting to see gamers turning against data-centers. One reason is that there is increasing competition for chips and RAM, which they see as a play to centralize control over computer hardware. Then Sam Altman comes out calling it "terrible" that ordinary people own their own RAM and that AI data-center should get priority because they use it so much better. Little surprise, this doesn't go down well with a subculture for which pimping their machines is foundational. Hyper-scalers really are a machine of politicization! https://youtu.be/t61q4kCbH9M

I finally gathered my thoughts on the avalanche of vibe coded clones of proprietary software, and the potential impacts (positive and negative) that it could have on #Linux. In short, I think this might be THE biggest opportunity we ever had to completely destroy every user lock-in measure Windows or macOS ever had, but that comes with significant costs in terms of open file formats and open source alternatives: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1htBFMQUL4

oh right so games/software can be decompiled/cloned at will and nobody did anything; but it takes 1 person trying to remove spyware from their TV OS and they got banned. I am not surprised obviously. Honestly if this is the type of stuff someone is using those tools go for it. They could disappear for all I care, but if the tools exist, show 'em. source: https://bsky.app/profile/esqueer.net/post/3myphka2iyk2o
