Bell labs and Xerox Parc are the greatest counter examples to the idea that monopolies stifle innovation. There are some kinds of research that can only be sustained by the funding power of monopolies.

This might be the best introduction book for Haskell. Its very long, but establishes the foundation very solidly.
It is a joint composition between a teacher and a student who was learning programming from scratch, so doesn't make comparisons to imperative languages which can prevent you from thinking in a functional manner.
It includes many questions along the way to keep you thinking and encourages you to experiment and test your results as you learn.
