| 2 | 🏁 The story behind the Dakar Rally
A rally driver got lost in the Ténéré desert in 1975 and turned that mistake into the world's toughest race.
After getting lost in the Ténéré desert during the 1975 Rallye Côte-Côte, Thierry Sabine decided the Sahara would make a perfect rally route. In December 1977 his idea became reality: 182 vehicles left Paris, only 74 reached Dakar after 10,000 kilometres, and Cyril Neveu won the first edition on a Yamaha.
The event grew fast, reaching 603 starters by 1988, but tragedy struck in 1986 when Sabine died in a helicopter crash. Security threats in Mauritania later cancelled the 2008 edition, pushing the rally to South America from 2009 to 2019.
Since 2020 the Dakar has run in Saudi Arabia, and since 2022 it forms part of the World Rally-Raid Championship, still drawing fields where professionals make up about eighty percent of entrants.
💡 Did you know? The 1988 Dakar Rally had 603 starters — its largest entry list ever recorded.

| 9 | 🏁 The story behind the Land Rover Defender
Born in 1983 as the One Ten, this British 4x4 would run for 33 years and over two million units.
The Land Rover series began at the Amsterdam Motor Show in April 1948. In 1983 the coil-sprung One Ten arrived, joined by the Ninety in 1984 and the One Two Seven in 1985, their names marking wheelbase lengths in inches. They added permanent four-wheel drive with a lockable centre differential and coil springs borrowed from the Range Rover.
When the Discovery launched in 1989, Land Rover became a brand name, not a model. So in 1990 the Ninety, One Ten and One Two Seven became Defender 90, 110 and 130.
Production ended 29 January 2016, after 2,016,933 units. The two millionth was built in May 2015 and auctioned for the Red Cross. In 2018 a 400 bhp Works V8 edition appeared, and an all-new Defender debuted in September 2019.
💡 Did you know? The Land Rover Ninety was named for its wheelbase despite actually measuring 92.9 inches.

| 20 | 🏁 The story behind the Rimac Nevera
A Croatian storm-car built near Zagreb toppled the Bugatti Chiron and rewrote what an electric hypercar could do.
Unveiled as the C_Two at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, the car was later renamed Nevera, after the sudden Adriatic storms of Croatia. Rimac Automobili spent over three years refining it, building four prototypes and opening a Veliko Trgovišće facility in June 2020, before completing European and US crash testing by February 2022.
In August 2022, Nico Rosberg took delivery of car number 1 of a 150-unit run. With 1,914 PS and 2,360 N⋅m from four motors, the Nevera hit 412 km/h at Papenburg in November 2022, then set 23 records in May 2023, including 0–400–0 km/h in 29.93 seconds.
In 2024, the sharper Nevera R arrived with 2,107 PS. On 10 July 2025, it ran 0–400–0 km/h in 25.79 seconds, beating the Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut's prior record of 27.93 seconds.
💡 Did you know? The Nevera carries a fire extinguisher embossed 'In case of hill climb, extinguish fire,' referencing Richard Hammond's Concept One crash.
