Over 2.3 million women are diagnosed with breast cancer globally each year, and it is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women worldwide. In our country, breast cancer is the most common cancer in Ethiopia, accounting for nearly 18,800 new cases and over 8,800 deaths annually. Sadly, over 80% of breast cancer cases in Ethiopia are diagnosed at advanced stages, where treatment becomes  more complex, costly, and less effective. When caught early before spreading outside the breast, the 5-year relative survival rate is approximately 99%, whereas if detected after spreading to distant organs (lungs, liver, bone), the 5-year survival rate drops drastically to around 30%. Because early-stage breast cancer often produces no pain and no noticeable external lump, without routine self-exams and clinical screenings, the tumor continues to grow undetected until late physical symptoms appear.

Therefore, early detection does not prevent cancer; it prevents cancer from taking lives.
