⭐️ The Arnaud Legoux Moving Average (ALMA) formula is an advanced variant of a moving average, developed by Arnaud Legoux and Dimitris Mostovoy in 2009. It combines the properties of traditional moving averages (such as SMA or EMA), but uses Gaussian distribution for weighting prices, making it more responsive to recent data and less prone to false signals (it smooths noise while preserving reaction to trends). ALMA is particularly useful in indicators, as in your TradingView code, where it is applied to calculate the base line (basis).
The main idea of ALMA
Traditional MA: Simple Moving Average (SMA) assigns equal weights to all prices in the window. Exponential (EMA) gives greater weight to recent prices, but can be too "nervous".
➡️ ALMA: Uses Gaussian (normal) distribution for weights, like in a bell-shaped curve. This allows shifting the "center of gravity" of the weights closer to the current price (using the offset parameter), making the indicator more adaptive. As a result, ALMA reacts faster to changes than SMA, but smooths better than EMA.
