Key takeaways from last night's UK election: * A near-record low turnout signals the utter disillusionment with the main political parties. * Despite facing off against the most reviled Tory party in living memory, Starmer's landslide of seats rests on a paltry vote share 5 percentage points below Corbyn's in 2017. * Starmer won chiefly because the right is in disarray, with much of it now fomenting and chasing after a white nationalist vote. * Starmer has sold his lack of a unifying political vision, and his refusal to offer a meaningful end to Tory austerity policies sucking wealth upwards to the rich, as the 'sensible' version of leftwing politics. That will only fuel voter disillusionment, leaving the far-right under Nigel Farage ready to pick up the pieces.

Now the Tories and Labour are joined at the hip in pursuing the same Thatcherite agenda against the NHS...

The same flaw in the human psyche that allows some of us to deny the genocide in Gaza allows others to deny the planet-wide genocide against all species. We confuse our fear-driven, tribal attachments – whether to Israel or to an impossible, endless growth – with objective 'progress'. We wage wars of domination, against the Palestinians or against the natural world, to allay our fears. And in doing so, we make not only monsters of ourselves but end up confronting the very horrors we thought we were extinguishing.

The only positive thing about the wrongful announcement of Noam Chomsky's demise – he's alive, if apparently in poor heath – is it provides a welcome excuse to revisit the highlights of a lifetime dedicated to exposing hypocrisy and schooling journalists...
