Alcohol in Islam: A Great Evil and a Cause of Destruction Islam strictly prohibits the consumption of alcohol because it corrupts the mind, weakens faith, destroys families, and opens the door to countless sins. What may appear to be a source of pleasure is, in reality, a path to regret, addiction, violence, and disobedience to Allah. Allah, the Exalted, says: «يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ وَالْمَيْسِرُ وَالْأَنْصَابُ وَالْأَزْلَامُ رِجْسٌ مِّنْ عَمَلِ الشَّيْطَانِ فَاجْتَنِبُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ ۝ إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ الشَّيْطَانُ أَن يُوقِعَ بَيْنَكُمُ الْعَدَاوَةَ وَالْبَغْضَاءَ فِي الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْسِرِ وَيَصُدَّكُمْ عَن ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَعَنِ الصَّلَاةِ ۖ فَهَلْ أَنتُم مُّنتَهُونَ» «"O you who have believed, indeed intoxicants, gambling, sacrificing on stone altars, and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid them that you may be successful. Satan only wants to cause between you enmity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to hinder you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist?"» (Qur'an 5:90–91) The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: «"Every intoxicant is khamr, and every khamr is prohibited."» (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2003) He ﷺ also said: «"Whatever intoxicates in large quantities, a small quantity of it is also forbidden."» (Sunan Abu Dawud, Hadith 3681; Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Hadith 1865 – authenticated by many scholars) Furthermore, the Prophet ﷺ warned against everyone involved with alcohol: «"Allah has cursed alcohol, the one who drinks it, the one who serves it, the one who sells it, the one who buys it, the one who squeezes it, the one for whom it is squeezed, the one who carries it, and the one to whom it is carried."» (Sunan Abu Dawud, Hadith 3674; Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3380) A believer seeks purity of heart, clarity of mind, and obedience to Allah. Therefore, he stays away from alcohol entirely—not only from drinking it, but also from producing it, selling it, transporting it, or assisting in its consumption. True success lies in obeying Allah, even when the soul is tempted by worldly desires. ⚠️
