WALL STREET WOBBLES AHEAD OF INFLATION DATA, OIL FALLS AS GOLD, DOLLAR RISE
The S&P 500 rose on Tuesday, along with the Nasdaq Composite, as investors bought technology stocks after their recent declines and tried to regain their footing after a rocky start to September.
The broad-market index advanced 0.1%, while the Nasdaq rose 0.4%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 191 points, or nearly 0.5%.
The moves come after traders dumped riskier assets last week — amid broader market turmoil — due to concerns about the health of the U.S. economy. But on Monday, the major averages were up more than 1% across the board.
Investors are also betting that a widely expected interest rate cut at the Federal Reserve’s Sept. 17-18 meeting could help ease concerns about a weak economy.
Traders are focusing on two key economic reports that are likely to be the next catalysts for stocks. The August CPI report is due on Wednesday, followed by the PPI on Thursday.
