Violence in the media promotes violence in society. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
In recent times, the portrayal of violent content in the media has become increasingly commonplace, leading to rising concerns over its potential impact on social behavior. While some argue that exposure to violent media promotes real-life aggression, I believe that its influence is relatively minimal. Despite a correlation between media violence and societal violence, personal responsibility and complex societal factors play significant roles in shaping behavior.
One argument in favor of the relationship between media violence and real-life aggression is that exposure to violent content in video games, films, or television news programs can desensitize individuals to acts of aggression, making anti-social behavior seem more acceptable or even normal. Additionally, repeated exposure to violent media may contribute to the formation of aggressive attitudes and values, which can perpetuate a cycle of violence. Studies have shown a pronounced relationship between consuming violent content and engaging in real-life aggression, particularly among vulnerable individuals such as impressionable teenagers or those with pre-existing aggression-related tendencies.
However, it is important to recognize that personal accountability takes precedence over external stimuli. Individuals possess free will and agency; therefore, they are responsible for their actions. Furthermore, social factors such as poor upbringing, peer pressure, inequality, social disintegration, and inadequate education systems play more crucial roles in promoting violence in society compared to mere exposure to violent content on television and social networking platforms.
Moreover, the coverage of violent content in the media provides a cathartic outlet for consumers. By vicariously experiencing aggression in a controlled environment, individuals may satisfy their innate tendencies without resorting to real-life actions.
In conclusion, although there is a minor association between media violence and real-life aggression, it is overshadowed by complex social factors that contribute to societal violence. Therefore, regulating violent content in the media alone is not enough in curbing violence in society. Addressing societal factors such as parental inadequacy, peer influence, poverty, social estrangement, and weak education systems is imperative in cultivating a non-violent society.
1️⃣Desensitize-make someone less likely to feel shock or distress at scenes of cruelty and suffering through overexposure to such violent images.
2️⃣Perpetuate-make something (especially bad) continue forever.
3️⃣External stimuli-external influences and factors that come from one’s surrounding environment.
4️⃣Free will and agency-the capacity of humans to make independent decisions and enact them onto the world.
5️⃣Poor upbringing/parental inadequacy- a lack of proper care, support, and guidance from parents or caregivers during times of childhood and adolescence.
6️⃣Social estrangement/disintegration/alienation-the state of feeling estranged or seperated from one’s social environment, including friends, co-workers, and neighbors.
7️⃣Peer pressure/influence-the influence from members of one’s peer group and friends, especially in a negative sense.

Guys, let me ask you a few questions:
1️⃣How long have you been studying IELTS and what is your current level of language proficiency?
2️⃣How much time do you spend studying IELTS on a day-to-day basis?
3️⃣What score do you want to get and why?
4️⃣How have you been studying IELTS, through online courses, offline classes, or self-study?
Your answers are of great importance for me!
