"But your ancestors were christian! How can you betray them!" My ancestors were Europeans, imbued with an imperishable spirit that was passed down to them by their ancestors and that they passed down onto me, a reincarnating and reoccurring spirit that always seeks out its own and innermost true nature. Not even two millennia of oppressive christian force could fully stamp out the European desire to appease native spirits, to tell native stories and to take part in native customs. It could wipe out knowledge of the gods themselves, their specific names and attributes, sure, as it did for many Europeans, but it could not eliminate that reincarnating desire to remain true to oneself. We pagans do not share the belief that our ancestors died and then are relegated to some jewish afterlife for the rest of existence. No, we understand death as dissolution, some parts of our ancestors moved on to other forms of existence while others were reborn in their descendants. They are their descendants in a very literal sense, and I am my ancestors. My own reversion to my native ethnic faith is also my ancestor's reversion. The innate spiritual battle that took place within each of my christian ancestors, one that waged on even if they were only aware of it at varying degrees of awareness, has finally been won, for those ancestors have been reborn as myself, a man born in a time when the top-down enforcement of christianity has ended, allowing me, and all ancestors reborn as me, to finally return to what is natural for any child of Europe. I honour my ancestors who lived as christians, by allowing them to experience worship and veneration of Gaelic Gods, in the form of myself.

Celt lovers will be interested in my forthcoming documentary. It looks at why the appearance of over 3000 hillforts in Iron Age Britain coincided with a steep rise in lactose tolerance. I filmed at six different hill forts, which you can see on the map above. Also got footage of relevant artefacts from the Iron Age museum of Andover. Coming very soon!

The hill of Allt Cunedda, near Kidwelly; Carmarthenshire, Wales. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Local tradition has it that the founder and first king of Gwynedd, Cunedda Wledig, son of Edern, was killed here. Cunedda was a chieftain from the northern region of Manaw Gododdin, located around present day Falkirk in what’s now Scotland. In the 5th century AD, he was invited by the rulers of southern Britain —possibly even Vortigern himself— to come to Wales and re-conquer large parts of it from Irish invaders who’d taken over and colonized the area. After many years of fighting, Cunedda and his people were successful in either killing or driving out most of the Irish from northern and western Wales. They carved out two kingdoms from the territories they had acquired: Gwynedd and Ceredigion. The old folk tale recorded around Kidwelly held that later on, Cunedda came to the area with his army, seeking to make additional conquests in south Wales (the area was part of the Kingdom of Dyfed at that time). At the hill that bears his name, he was met by a large band of locals (presumably including Irish colonists), who fought a battle against him in which he was finally defeated and killed. Cunedda was said to have been buried nearby; his sons Einion Yrth and Ceredig followed him as kings of Gwynedd and Ceredigion respectively. We believe and declare that freedom—the right to ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness’—is inherent in every creature made in the image and likeness of God, & that, however individuals, by crime or violation of the laws passed for the maintenance and well-being of society, may forfeit any portion of those rights, the enslavement of a homogeneous people, either by foreign power or domestic tyranny, cannot, under any circumstances, be justified The God of nature, in placing between the English and Irish nations not only the distinctions marked by differences of national character, but, also, natural barriers, which,—in spite of special legislation, designed to obliterate the nationality of Ireland, have kept them separate & distinct as peoples,—has written on imperishable record the claims of our country to independent national existence, and made earth and sea the witnesses to the inviolability of our charter of freedom Declaration of Principles of the Fenian Brotherhood, CLEVELAND, Ohio, Sept 7, 1867

AFTERMATH OF DUN NECHTAIN 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 ⚔️ 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Following the death of Ecgfrith and victory over the Northumbrians was the grinding halt of Christianization of modern day Scotland. And the breaking of Northumbrian hegemony in the north of the isles. The triumphant king of the Picts, Bridei, son of Beli, would use this opportunity to unite the Picts and give them a unified sense of identity. He transformed the squabbling Picts into a strong state, and pushed out the invading Saxons. Bridei, son of Beli as King of Fortriu saw the decisive moment of what historians call the Verturian Hegemony. In 680, King Bridei, son of Beli, took Dùn Fhoithear in northeastern Scotland, and in 681 attacked Orkney. The successors of Bridei would build upon his success at Dan Nechtain and unite the Pictish people, and form a powerful Celtic state in the north of the British isles. It would not be until 150 years later when the Pictish hegemony in the north would be challenged.

THE BATTLE OF DUN NECHTAIN 685 CE, Pictland. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 ⚔️ 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 The Battle of Dun Nechtain marked a decisive turning point in the history of the British isles. Up to this point, the Angles, Jutes and Saxons (Anglo Saxons) have been dominating across the isles, at the expense of the Celtic people. Bede records that the Northumbrians managed to subjugate the Picts of modern day Scotland, later to revolt in 670 at the Battle of Two Rivers. While the Northumbrian King Ecgfrith emerged victorious, the Picts continued their resistance 14 years later after subjugation and slavery. Later, King Drest was deposed & succeeded by Bridei, son of Beli. By 679, Northumbrian hegemony began falling apart climaxing at the battle of Dan Nechtain. The Picts lured in the Northumbrian Saxons with a feigned retreat, and the Saxons, confident they had already won, took the bait. What followed was a slaughter of the Saxons and Ecgfrith was slain in battle.
