Month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus ~ June 14th [122. continued] There is also another kind of humility which is false, and against which we are warned by the Holy Ghost when He says: “Be not lowly in thy wisdom, lest being humbled thou be deceived into folly.” [Ecclus xiii, 11] If you possess the talent of teaching, counselling, helping and doing good to the souls of others, and you then retire, saying, as if from humility: “I am not good enough”; or if you are in a position when it is your duty to correct, punish or exercise authority, and you abandon it from motives of humility, this is not true humility but weakness and cowardice, and as far as externals are concerned we must observe the rule of the holy father St. Augustine: “Lest whilst humility is unduly observed the authority of the ruler be undermined amongst those who ought to be submissive.” [In Reg.] (continued)

When Christ came, hatred, jealousy, selfishness, strife, was the order of the day. He came to spread charity, self-sacrifice, peace, mutual good will. Yet how faintly this flame burns in my cold heart! How much of selfishness and ill-feeling and petty jealousy still remains there! 3. This fire of love to God and man gives birth to another fire, which also consumes the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and burns in the hearts of all who love Him; the fire of zeal for souls and a desire to labor and suffer for them. How this fire burned in the hearts of the saints, of St. Paul, St. Francis Xavier, St. Vincent de Paul, St. Alphonsus Liguori. While Our Lord was upon earth, He several times expressed to His apostles what He had most at heart, and what was the work He had chiefly come to perform. He told them that He had come to send fire on the earth, and asked them what else they could expect Him to desire except that that fire should speedily be enkindled (St. Luke xii. 49). Yes, Jesus came to kindle on earth the fire of Divine love. Does this fire burn brightly in my heart, and do I fulfill His longing that it should be kindled more and more in me? (continued)

[1 Peter v, 3] And when you are obliged to correct them, do you do it in the proper spirit: “In the spirit of meekness,” as the Apostle teaches us, “considering thyself lest thou also be tempted”? It is towards these that you must exercise humility most of all. “The greater thou art,” says the inspired word, “the more humble thyself in all things.” [Ecclus iii, 20] And although they are inferior as regards their condition of life, remember always that before God they are your equals. “Knowing that the Lord both of them and you is in Heaven, and there is no respect of persons with Him.” [Eph. vi, 9] (continued)

Congr. of Indulgences, Nov. 26, 1876, granted to all the faithful, every time that, with at least contrite heart and devotion, they shall say this ejaculation : AN INDULGENCE OF 300 DAYS. A PLENARY INDULGENCE, once a month, to all who have the pious custom of saying it daily, on any day, when, being truly penitent, after confession and communion, they shall visit a church or public oratory, and pray there devoutly, for some time, for the intention of his Holiness.

He has a still greater compassion for those who have separated themselves from God by sin, and who are desirous to be freed from the chain that has bound them down, and to return to their Father in heaven. What sweetness thence proceeds to fill the heart of the sinner who does penance! 3.He has the greatest compassion of all for His servants and saints who are suffering for Him. How it grieves Him to witness their pains! What consolations He pours into their souls! What a reward He promises Himself to give them for what they have endured for love of Him! Every sort of suffering has a claim on His Divine compassion. 1. He has the most intense compassion for those who are suffering any earthly sorrow. None appreciates as He the utter loneliness of the mother who has lost her son; of the friend who is separated from one who was dear as life itself. At the tomb of Lazarus and at the gates of Nairn He manifested His tender sympathy with sorrow. To Him, then, we will have recourse when earthly shadows press hard upon us. (continued)

Do you feel that humility of heart towards them “with a good will serving” [Eph. vi, 7] which St. Paul enjoins? There is a humility necessary for the imitation of Christ, “Who humbled Himself, becoming obedient unto death.” [Phil. ii, 8] There may sometimes be an excuse of impotence or inadvertence in not obeying those whom God has set over you, but to refuse to obey is always an act of inexcusable pride. 2 of 2 The Sanctity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus 2. Happily for us the Sacred Heart of Jesus, by reason of the Divine nature of Our Lord, has also unbounded love for sinners. His infinite sanctity makes Him long after them with an inexhaustible love and an unceasing desire to see them rid of the sin that defiles them. If sins still cling to me it is not His fault, but my own. It is owing to my want of correspondence to His constant invitations to come to Him to be healed of all sin. 3. There is also communicated to the Sacred Heart a boundless store of created graces of the same kind as those bestowed on us, but immeasurably higher in degree. In this store is contained the grace necessary for every need, and among them the special graces which I need, and which are there ready to flow into my soul if I put no hindrance in the way. ~ Rev. The Sacred Heart of Jesus hates sin as God hates it, loathes it with inexpressible loathing. How, then, can I, who am so full of sin, venture to appeal to the Heart to which sin is thus foul with a foulness that knows no bound or limit? At least I can pray that I may share in a greater degree this hatred of sin, and so learn to avoid it. (continued)
