The Stranger at Platform Seven It was nearly midnight when Daniel arrived at the railway station. The place was unusually deserted, except for an old man sitting on a bench beneath a flickering lamp. Daniel had been travelling for almost twelve hours. He was exhausted, but something about the old man caught his attention. The stranger was holding a small, weather-beaten suitcase and staring intently at the railway tracks. “Are you waiting for someone?” Daniel asked. The old man slowly turned his head. “No,” he replied. “I’m waiting for a train that doesn’t exist anymore.” Daniel smiled, assuming the man was joking. However, the stranger’s expression remained completely serious. “What do you mean?” The old man pointed towards Platform Seven. “Every Friday at midnight, a train arrives there. It takes people to the place they regret leaving.” Daniel felt a sudden chill. He glanced at the platform. There was no train, only thick darkness. “That sounds impossible.” “Most important things do,” the stranger whispered. At exactly midnight, the station lights suddenly went out. For several seconds, there was absolute silence. Then Daniel heard the distant sound of a train approaching. His heart began to pound. A bright light appeared in the darkness, and an old-fashioned train slowly emerged from the tunnel. It looked as though it had travelled through decades rather than kilometres. The doors opened. Inside, Daniel saw dozens of people sitting silently. Some were young, some old. None of them spoke. The old man stood up. “I’ve been waiting for this moment for forty years.” Daniel stared at him in astonishment. “Where does it go?” The stranger smiled sadly. “To yesterday.” He stepped onto the train. Suddenly, Daniel remembered something he had tried desperately to forget: his younger brother, whom he had argued with five years earlier. They had never spoken again after that night. Daniel felt a wave of remorse. The train began to move. Without thinking, he ran towards it. Just before the doors closed, he jumped inside. For the first time in five years, Daniel had the opportunity to say the words he had been too reluctant to say: “I’m sorry.” The train disappeared into the darkness. The next morning, Daniel woke up in his childhood bedroom. His brother was standing in the doorway. “Daniel?” Daniel could barely breathe. His brother smiled. “Come on. Mum’s waiting for breakfast.” Daniel realized that sometimes life gives us a second chance—but only if we are brave enough to recognize it. And when he looked through the window, there was no railway station. Only an empty field. And, in the distance, a single railway track that seemed to disappear into the horizon.
