The "Prehensile" Tongue: A deer’s tongue is long, muscular, and incredibly agile. They can extend it far enough to reach deep into the folds of their outer ear. • The Scratch-and-Lick: Since they don’t have fingers to pick things out, they use a combination of their back hooves to scratch the "itch" and then follow up with their tongue to clean the area. • Social Grooming: If they can't reach a spot themselves, they rely on "allogrooming." You’ll often see two deer standing face-to-face, nibbling and licking each other’s ears and necks. It’s partly for hygiene, but it also helps strengthen the bond between herd members.

Deer fact of the day: The "clicking" knees are actually one of nature’s smartest survival hacks. It’s most famous in Reindeer (Caribou), and it’s not coming from the bones rubbing together The sound is created by a sesamoid ligament sliding over a bone in their foot. As the reindeer takes a step, the tension builds and then releases with a sharp snap, much like cracking your knuckles. Why it’s Cool • The "Follow Me" Signal: In the Arctic, visibility can drop to zero in seconds during a blizzard. Instead of getting lost and freezing, the herd can literally "hear" the path. As long as they hear the clicking of the deer in front of them, they know they’re still on track. • Size Matters: Interestingly, the loudness of the click is often tied to the size of the deer. A bigger, stronger male usually has a louder snap, which helps establish dominance without the deer even having to get into a physical fight. • Energy Efficient: It doesn’t cost the deer any extra energy to make this noise; it’s a purely mechanical byproduct of walking.

Deer fact of the day: Most deer species don't have top incisors(teeth) Instead, they have a tough, leathery pad at the top of their mouths that they use to tear and grind plants against their bottom teeth.
