The rise of the Nazi party in parliament began after the 1929 economic crisis. Before that, the NSDAP was a small, unimportant party, achieving 3% in the December 1924 election and 2.6% in the May 1928 election. However, the 1929 Depression had a large negative influence on Germany, causing widespread economic recession and an increase in unemployement, with figures rising from 1.33 million unemployed in 1928 to1.9 million in 1929 and 3.08 million in 1930. This economic climate of despair gave rise to the Nazi Party, who promised work and a solution of the crisis to the people. In the September 1930 general election, the NSDAP won 18.3% and 107 seats, compared to only 12 seats in 1928. They thus became the second strongest party in the Reichstag, second to only the SPD, who won 24.5% of votes. The Nazis used the Reichstag to aggresivley attack the government and the democratic system of the Weimar Republic, staging walk- outs or started singing either the German anthem or the Nazi party anthem. They also often attacked other MPs or parties, resulting in them getting thrown out of parliament quite often. This speech is an excerpt of a longer answer that Goebbels gave to a speech by the German chancellor, Heinrich Brüning, during a session on February 5th, 1931. - Subtitles made by me.
