According to an announcement from the president's office on November 7th, 2026, the decision follows intensive post-election coalition consultations with political factions.
The October 27th national ballot left Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, deeply divided. However, during consultations with President Herzog, Eisenkot emerged as the clear favorite for the first mandate:
Gadi Eisenkot: Endorsed by 67 lawmakers out of the 120-seat Knesset. His backers include members of his own Yashar party and two Arab-majority lists.
Benjamin Netanyahu: Endorsed by 46 lawmakers.
