We want to do better to provide them with the support they need for career protection, progression, and placement”_* Ahead of the NTUC May Day 2024 celebrations, NTUC Secretary-General (SG) Ng Chee Meng outlined in a media session how NTUC and our affiliated unions have been speaking up and taking action for PMEs in terms of workplace fairness and protection, career progression and job placement. Some highlights include: - Training over 75% of the projected 12,000 HR professionals in Singapore and certifying them by IHRP. 🧑‍💼 - Stepping up workplace representation for PMEs through our affiliated unions and associations. This has resulted in more unions now representing PMEs. 👏 - Helping PMEs with dispute management; the highest recovery settlement recorded at $68,000 since 2021 💵 🔗 Read more here: https://bit.ly/4aMj8tJ

Over the last two days, SPWU delegates and observers attended the NTUC National Delegates' Conference (NDC) to reflect on what the Labour Movement has achieved these past four years, and also discuss how we can better serve workers in the years to come. During NDC, the Labour Movement committed to furthering its representation of workers by engaging the PMET and youth demographics, as well as through clustering efforts. Alongside the Labour Movement, SPWU is committed to ensuring that our workers will see higher wages, enhanced welfare, and better work prospects. SPWU would like to congratulate our President, Brother Arasu Duraisamy, for his re-election into NTUC's Central Committe (CC) as the Secretary for Financial Affairs. We would also like to extend our congratulations to all the elected members of the CC, and the union delegates for their strong support.

It's been 77 years with SPWU! SPWU first started out in 1946 as the Singapore Harbour Board Staff Association (SHBSA). After the turbulence of the 1950s and 1960s, the union and the Port Authority of Singapore started to strengthen their relationship. This translated to improved conditions for the workers as they saw an increase in wages and better accomodation. Since then, SPWU has continued to champion the rights of workers in the port sector as the industry grows from strength to strength. As Singapore's oldest union, the relative stability that SPWU enjoys today is made possible by the strong support from our dedicated members, partners, leaders, and well-wishers since the beginning. To many more birthdays and milestones with everyone 🎂✌️🏻!
