Muhammad ibn Shihab az Zuhri was traveling and still fasted on the Day of Ashura, so it was said to him, “You fast on the Day of Ashura while traveling, but you break your fast in Ramadan?” He replied, “Ramadan fasts can be made up on other days, but the Day of Ashura will pass you by (i.e., it is not legislated to make it up later).” [شعب الأيمان للبيهقي ٣٥١٨]

Regarding the fast after the day of Ashura (11th of al-Muharram) - the people of knowledge say there is no authentic Hadith regarding it. So fasting the 9th , 10th AND 11th has been criticised by the people of knowledge So the best level of fasting is to fast the 9th and 10th of al- Muharram. And if one falls short and fasts only on the 10th of al-Muharram, he will be rewarded for the sunnah. - Shaykh Aziz Farhan al Anzi حفظه الله https://youtu.be/-qr-dpHPEcA?si=v_0qe_qBIjHCQtgU Listen to this 2-3 min for more information in sha Allah

This day is fasted out of gratitude! The Prophet ‎ﷺ came to al Madinah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of ‘Ashura. He asked “What is this?” They responded, “This is a virtuous day, as this is the day Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy. Thus, Musa fasted on this day.” He ‎ﷺ said, “We have more right to Musa than you.” (Or we are closer to Musa than you because Musa was a Muslim and we are Muslim). So he ‎ﷺ fasted this day and ordered the (people) to fast. Sahih al Bukhari 2004

Ibn Rajab رحمه الله said: "As for taking it ('Ashura) as a day of gatherings of grief, like what the Rafidha do due to the killing of al Hussain رضي الله عنه taking place on this day, then this is from the actions of those whose effort is lost in this worldly life, while they think that they are doing something good. And Allah and His Messenger ‎ﷺ did not command us to take the days of the calamities of the Prophets as days of grief, so what about those who are below the Prophets?" Lata’if al Ma’arif 113

Al-Bayhaqi reported that Shurayh said: “When I am afflicted by al-musibah (ie: misfortune and adversity), I praise Allah four times for it: 1 I praise him for it could have been far worse, 2 I praise him for granting me the patience to bear it, 3 I praise him for allowing me to recollect the (potential) reward awaiting me, 4 And I praise him for not making it (the calamity) an affliction in my religion.” السيوطي، الدر المنثور في التفسير بالمأثور
