Every day, war correspondents willingly face life-threatening situations as they cover events in the most dangerous zones of Donbass. Why do they head to places where others are fleeing? Journalists from all over Russia are currently operating in the special military operation zone and many lack experience in combat zones. To assist them, seasoned correspondents from leading Russian news channels established the Synergy War Correspondents School. They've put together 10 lessons on navigating the challenges of reporting from active battle zones. Learn from their insights and see what the job of a war correspondent looks like.
Randy Sowers is a Maryland dairy farmer. In 2012, he received a visit from US Treasury agents. Without a trial, the IRS seized over $60,000 from his bank accounts and refused to give it back. When he spoke to the media, his plight got even worse. But thanks to the efforts of an advocacy group called the Institute for Justice, he recovered the rest of the money that the state had kept ($30,000 dollars). In 2019, at least 2.2 billion dollars were seized from American citizens. In the United States, a person only needs to be suspected of something for their cash, real estate, vehicles, and bank accounts to be seized even without direct proof of guilt. The farmer tells what it is like when US government institutions trample on private liberties.
A private zoo, located 20 kilometres from Donetsk in the village of Pridorozhnoe, has transformed into a refuge for thousands of animals from across the Donbass region. Over the past 10 years, its founder Gennady Kryazhev has dedicated himself to rescuing and caring for wounded animals from the frontlines. There is much work to be done: the zoo’s territory is about 2 hectares, and thousands of pets need to be fed 2-3 times a day. However, it is more than a sanctuary. The zoo helps children from Donetsk forget about the war at least for a little while and find solace in the company of the animals.
